Default IS Change okay?

I have seen the latest previews for Justice League. In them Barry Allen, The Flash is grossed out by slime and doesn't know anything about combat.

Now I get that a lot of people who watch the movie may not ever find out why that's weird.

Barry Allen is a cop. He's a Police Scientist. CSI in today's parlance but one that works strictly for one police department. My point being he's seen crime scenes he's been to crime scenes a bit of slime should not be "gross" to him.

Yet in the preview he calls it gross. This makes me think they've altered the character's personality and I wonder by how much. Barry Allen has always been more of a Boy Scout than Superman. He's a firm "do the right thing" kind of guy with a spine of steel.

He's also never been a "kid" He's always been a firmly defined character.

So what do you think should a character be allowed to change from the source material in a very real way and if so how much?
