Walling Off Canada

Surely, no sane legitimate political candidate would actually suggest walling off Canada from the US, right?

The Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker said on Sunday that building a wall on the US northern border with Canada was “a legitimate issue for us to look at”.

Maybe it's a fairness issue? People want a wall on the Mexican border, so to not be racist, we have to build one at the Canadian border too?

They'd have to build a wall around Hawaii and Alaska, too, you know.

I think, though, that if they want to get all silly about it, then the best solution is a dome for the 48 contiguous states, a dome each for Hawaii and Alaska, and a dome for each of its territories. Sure, it will make the resulting air pollution suffocate those inside, and make them die from heat exhaustion, and it doesn't factor in the feelings of the American expats, but at least it keeps the unwanted out, right?

Oh no see it makes perfect sense because if he gets elected, how many people are going to want to flee for the border? Walling us off is an attempt to keep us in, not to keep Canadians out

not to mention that lets face it, walls as an anti-immigration method haven't generally worked very well in the past. (for all the Berlin Wall was feared, it's generally accepted that somewhere between 100-300 people died trying to cross. Out of around 5,000 who tried.) The less said about the wall between Isreal and Palestine, the better. ( as often happens, all the wall really achieved was making it harder for people who legitimately needed to cross. ( the wall was built inside the West Bank, and there was more than one farmer with part of their property on the other side.)) the same applies to various attempts at walling off the southern border of the US. ( they rarely work to stop the people smugglers, and tend to simply irritate people.)

Walker wants to build a wall on the Canada-U.S. border? Make sure it's good and tight so none of that Alberta oil leaks into the U.S. (we need it back home). Build it watertight, continuing down the border in the Great Lakes. After all, you guys stupidly allowed the Asian carp to be farmed in your territory (needless to say, they escaped), they're almost at the Great Lakes, and we DON'T want them on our side. Oh yeah - you'll need to break out the shovels. If you look at a map, the Welland canal (bypasses Niagara Falls) is on the Canadian side, and from the Ontario/Quebec line to the sea the St. Lawrence has Canada on both banks, so you'll need to do some serious expansion of the Erie Canal in order to get freight transported by ship from the Atlantic to the U.S. ports on the Great Lakes.

The reason Walker wants the wall is so that when he gets elected President, he'll have a wall to the north and a wall to the south and when he tries to push through legislation by slamming it down people's throats, it will make it harder for the Democratic members of Congress to slip over the boarder so they can make it impossible to hold a vote since not enough members of Congress are actually available to vote.

He has to pull away from that idea because he certainly doesn't like to share with the citizens he claims to represent.

wouldn't work. (as in, the wall wouldn't work to prevent quorum) Quorum is when enough congressmen are present IN THE CHAMBER. Technically, assuming congressmen have offices in the actual building, they could all be in those and it would STILL prevent a vote. ( indeed, if you can PROVE a vote was taken in the absence fo quorum, said vote can be overturned.)

I've had several friends in Canada talk about walling off Quebec, but leave it to a blowhard American senator to go above and beyond. Plus, I'm pretty sure said friends were (mostly) kidding.

Asked in an interview on NBC if he wanted to build a wall on the Canadian border, the Wisconsin governor cited his experience talking to voters “including some law enforcement folks” in New Hampshire, an early voting state in the Republican primaries. Such people, he said, were concerned about terrorists potentially crossing over from Canada.

Um, yeah, Canada doesn't like terrorists any more than the USA does.

However, concerns about the border with Canada, a country that has witnessed two attacks by Islamist terrorists in the past year, have so far gone unaddressed.

I would think a better anti-terrorist initiative would be to work with Canada, rather than wall them off and say everybody's on their own.

Canada is one of our best friends in the world. I really don't want to anger them, and I can't understand why the GOP does.
