This is in relation to my thread posted yesterday on CS.com

    http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...d.php?t=113934

One of the camera guys who works for Disco. Decker Watson has publicly asked on FB (at the request of Sig's cardiologist & Johnathan Hillstrand's doctor also) that anyone who sees either of them, out in public, at meet & greets, at the docks in Dutch to GENTLY BUT FIRMLY give both shit over using tobacco. I've shared it on my personal timeline on FB, link is below for those who want to refer to it, it's the first post on the page

    https://www.facebook.com/JefafaDunHamManiac47

Now, I realize, folks are gonna do, what folks are gonna do & there's not much that anyone else can do about it except them (and only when they're good & ready). BUT, as someone who was devastated when Phil died (a death that btw, was completely preventable. He had been warned that the first PE was a warning & when, not if, it happened again he would not survive, then there's also the fact that he was NOT MEDICALLY CLEARED to be on the boat/at sea at that point to start with. The stroke actually happened at sea & the collapse later at the dock was a delayed reaction IMHO)

But on Decker's post, folks are arguing back & forth, some are saying "MYOB" & "nagging will only cause their blood pressure to skyrocket, which in Sig's case will cause another heart attack", which I think is complete BULLSHIT & others, myself included are saying "we have already been devastated once & we can't take watching yet someone else we care about deteriorate & die on national t.v again" (and those in that camp believe if we don't SPEAK UP, that it WILL HAPPEN AGAIN GUARANTEED..The MYOB camp claim that throwing Phil's death in their faces in an attempt to wake them up is cruel, um NO, IT'S CALLED REALITY!!!...I'm of the mind, I'll take that risk if it means we have them both for many more years to come. I mean, the Cornelia Marie has become a "shit show" in Keith's words since Phil died (and that's with all due respect to Casey), that boat's circling the drain & we don't want to see the same happen to the Northwestern or the Time Bandit

I just...I dunno...I don't know either of them personally, I'm friends on FB with them, I "know them" through my t.v & that's the extent of it, but I feel like if we fans present a united front, that MAYBE they'll think twice before lighting up..There's more being said, but this post is novel length already so...

Ya'll check out the comments, post your thoughts on here, good, bad & ugly, just please don't take it in Fratching direction (I'll link over there so we can take the ugly stuff there)

Giving someone useful information they don't have, or may have forgotten, is helpful. Is it reasonable to think a smoker, especially one who's had medical issues because of their smoking, doesn't know it's bad for them? NO. So nagging them isn't being helpful; it's just being obnoxious.

The bigger problem with this is that asking the general pubic at large to target someone specific rarely ends well.

Graveskeeper, even if it's at the request of the doctors involved?

I mean, the docs have gotta figure that we fans have SOME sway especially for a show that was expected to last ONE season & is still going strong 12 YEARS later

HYHYBT, I see your point, I do, but I disagree. I mean, yeah there's likely to be one bad apple that walks up to them & gets aggressive about it (which to those folks I say, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!) but most of us would do it in such a way so's as to let them know we care what happens to them & want them around for a long time yet

I mean, look at Leonard Nimoy, he quit smoking 30 some odd years ago & still died from COPD, but at least he wasn't in his '50's when he died ya know?

The problem is that a) quite a few people will probably take it too far and b) I have relatives as stubborn as Sig. When they are nagged about something, they dig their heels in, and it makes them LESS likely to do something.

Oh, and I actually doubt the Northwestern or Time Bandit would have the same problems the CM is having should Sig or Johnathan die. The CM's problem is that they had no real succession plan should Phil die. (he had nobody who could take over for him- his kids weren't ready, and he had nobody lined up to take over the boat in the interim) while both the NW and TB have obvious successors- the NW has Edgar (or, in extremis, they could probably persuade Jake to return) while the TB has Andy, and I think Neal no longer works the deck, so could probably pitch in too.

My answer was *before* considering that there will be "bad apples." It is rude to nag. Do you go up to fat people and tell them "wow, you're fat! Quit eating so much, and it's OK for me to say that because I care?"

In the end, no matter what specialists or whoever says to nag them, unless it's the person themselves saying it, don't do it. It's 2016. EVERYONE knows smoking is bad for you and can kill you. It's their decision to do it. It's just going to piss them off, not accomplish anything, and then someone will get punched in the face for badgering them and they'll have it coming. It's one thing when it's someone you are close with. If you vaguely know of the person and want to say something, just keep your mouth shut and let them live their life even if what they are doing (smoking) is fucking idiotic.

why exactly are the doctors sharing PRIVATE MEDICAL INFORMATION with the general public? I'd be questioning what ethics the doctor has since they're not only breaching whatever health privacy laws, but saying "hey harass and bully these people in public"

Remove the doctor and ask "is this ok?"
Because really, how can that even be considered remotely acceptable?

I have people in my life who smoke. People who I care about quite a bit, and it would break my heart to watch them get sick and die. With at least one of those people, there is valid concern for the effect it is having on her life and she is the one I care about the most. Despite that, I have no right to constantly remind her every time I see her light a cigarette. She knows how I feel about it and that I care and that's all I can do. If it wouldn't be right for me to constantly remind her not to smoke every time I see her doing it, why would it be ok for me to do something like that to someone I don't even know?
If it were something like the fans doing things online to make him know that they care and don't want him to die I don't think I'd see a problem with it. People approaching him whenever they see it or encouraging others to do so however, crosses that line between letting someone know you care/what your opinion is and trying to nag someone into living how you want them to. The doctor's opinion doesn't change any of that.

My boyfriend smokes. He knows I would prefer he didn't, or to use e-cigarettes (which science has proven has the same effect on the lungs as breathing air.) I know he's trying. He is buying the e-ciggs and using them, but every once in a while when things are just going really poorly he flips back to cigarettes. He's cut way down on them though.

I'm not going to jump on his back when he lights up a real cigarette, because if he is doing that I already know shit is happening and he doesn't need me on top of that.

Encouraging people to HARASS others on decisions they are making for themselves is not right. Especially if you are a doctor! You have a position of authority, and you are using that to rally people into something that is ultimately NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. It's 2016. No one believes that smoking is good for them in the long run.

Late to the thread, but my 2c.

It is the doctors job to give days to your life. It is your job to give life to your days.

A doctor has no right to dictate how someone must live. NOONE has any right to tell anyone how they must live (under normal circumstances. Abuse, crime, minors, and so forth all have their own set of rules). Nagging them to change their habits is doing just that, dictating (polite as it may be) how someone lives. And any doctor that tells anyone else what their patient is suffering from, should lose their licence. Doctor/patient confidentiality isn't something to make light of.

Part of doctors' jobs is to consult patients on how to be healthier. A while back I was diagnosed with high cholesterol. My doctor told me how to control it with diet and exercise and prescribed a pill to me. I found it hard to adopt those new habits, and after 6 months when I came back and the doctor found no improvements, he asked what I was struggling with, and we had a frank discussion about it. Nothing wrong with that.

If a patient defies a doctor's orders, it's their prerogative, but it's the doctors prerogative to suggest changes in one's lifestyle and habits to improve their health. It's not about dictating. Doctor's orders aren't bound by any law (unless it's something like 'do not operate a car') so to say their suggestions or even nagging is some kind of dictating is nonsense. Part of a doctor's role is to be a consultant. I go to the doctor because I want to, first, make sure I'm in good health and, second, find ways to improve my health.

not what kamn said, TheHuckster. what I think kamn was trying to say is that a doctor has no right to try to FORCE someone to change something they are doing. Sig Hansen's doctor can advise him that if he doesn't give up smoking, he will end up like Phil Harris. Sig Hansen's doctor CANNOT tell fans of the show to nag Sig about smoking. Why? for two reasons. One is that it is a breach of patient/doctor confidentiality- while no legally privileged information has been given out- I think- when someone talk to their doctor, they are relying on said doctor not speaking to all and sundry about what thye might say. Second is that it's ultimately Sig's decision.

He was specifically saying that "noone has any right to tell anyone how they must live" and goes on to condemn doctors who nag. While I would agree doctors who needlessly beat a dead horse about someone's habits is often counterproductive, it is part of their job to advise them about how to lead a healthy life.

Nobody has ever said anything about forcing someone to change. How the hell does a doctor FORCE that, anyway? Does the doc stand by the patients swiping out any cigarette out of their hand? Even this incident isn't about force. Sig can still do whatever he wants, it's just the doctor's asshole approach to it exacerbated the issue.

I agree doctors should never disclose any information (regardless of its content) about their patients, though.

So you'd be fine with your doctor taking out an ad in the paper saying "the huckster has high cholesterol, if you see him eating anything high in fat be sure to remind him of his high cholesterol, loudly, in public, it's for his health"

Because that's what this "doctor" is doing.
