Something fairly monumental just happened for me here on Fratching. I was responding to a death penalty thread (specifically, I made this post), and in so doing changed my position.
I was at least okay with the death penalty before I made that post. Now, though, I've realized that, in allowing the death penalty, I am trusting the government to get that one thing right (that they found, tried, and convicted the guilty party), when I trust them with absolutely nothing else.
When it comes to dealing with the government, I absolutely expect things will go wrong, and usually very badly. Yet, here I am trusting one thing to be done right, and it's more critical than most anything else they do. But they can't possibly be trusted to get things right.
My mind has changed. I can't argue for the death penalty any more, not even in extreme cases. How do I know the government did its job properly?
So, what has Fratching changed for you? What views did you hold that are now changed thanks to the community here?
