  • Is it an age thing?

I was walking with my daughter yesterday and where her mom lives there are two playgrounds one sucks one is awesome. We go to the sucky one first and she says, "Ah this is the lamo playground".

I laughed and asked her since when did she start using that word her response.

"It's a cool kid word and I am a cool kid"

Then I realized I haven't said that word in years. Do you think some words are age related and you stop saying them at a certain point?

I suspect that very young children use the slang that their parents use-- up until the point where they start watching movies and TV meant for adults.

So one of her friends's parents probably uses "lamo" because that's what he said when he was a child. At some point, something other than Sesame Street will become available to those kids and they'll pick up more contemporary language.

Actually I don't think she has watched Sesame Street in a really long time. She is really big on Phineas and Ferb.

It's something I have noticed though somethings seem to not so much be "something coming back" As something that never went away but you don't really see until your kid is that age.

I guess what I'm saying is that she is unlikely to have picked up "lamo" from a children's program. It probably came from a friend, and that friend probably picked it up from their parent. And parents use slang that was popular when they were young.

And the children will probably use those 'cool kid' words until they realize that those were the same words you (as an 'un-cool' adult) used to be a cool-kid back in your day, which you know was aaaages ago.
RE: lamo, cool, wicked, hot, awesome, etc...

I know I stopped using those words when they stopped being 'cool'... right after high school.

                Radical.

I had a teenage player on Xbox LIVE seemed surprise that I, an "old man," was cool (I forgot the reason).

                ...but I'm only 26.

If you're an old man at 26, then what does that make me, a woman of 37?

BTW, I still prefer to use the word "groovy".

Hey, I'm 23 and I get that... every single job I've had sense I was 21 I've had the problem of people assuming that I'm older than I am.

I generally assume that the only ones who used "groovy" anymore were either hippies or Evil Dead/Army of Darkness fans.

                            No idea, never said that.

Probably a comment used in the colonies?

Some possibilities of what 23 Skidoo means

Yes, I do like Army of Darkness. And back in my high school years (1986 - 1990), I was known as "hippie".

And thanks Winsgate_Hellsing ... I like being the Wicked Witch of the WEST! At least my child thinks I'm evil when I put her Olivia stufed animal and the tv remote into time out whenever she is naughty.
