What I'm finding out, in a way, is who my friends are and aren't. There are people I was close with at one time who I purposely sought out...who accepted my friend request, but otherwise seem to ignore me. People I never expected would give a shit talk to me far more than the people I *thought* I could still call friend. Some of them don't even respond to the "Hey how are you" messages I dropped them.

Social networking is fantastic, depressing and sometimes weird all at the same time.

Don't take it personally. They may be like me and only check once a month if that and don't usually respond to anybody.

I've got a Twitter account, but that's only for stalking 4 people (2 of them because they're damn amusing). I have yet to make any comments.

Exactly. There's a lot of people from here and CS over on Facebook and these are the only ways I will probably ever get to communicate with them. Mostly because they happen to be on different continents than me.

I agree with the hating of everything needing to be on facebook for it to be official. I also hate when people are dating and doing it for awhile but because it wasn't facebook official it is ok to do something shitty and not even something that is gray area/questionable and then claim well that it is ok because the couple weren't really official as it never made it to facebook.

Oh, not to mention potential employers judge you for what they see. I have 300 friends but don't usually pose for pictures at parties because I don't want that image to get out, even when I have my privacy settings set where I can't be seen I don't need to risk them accidentally changing. Of course I think it is unprofessional for hiring managers to look at your facebook especially if they havn't met you because they could easily find reasons to discriminate hopefully not ones protected but you never know. My work life and personal life are kept separate for a reason. Im not going to come home and say WORK SUCKS I HATE MY BOSS, but i really would like the option.

I refuse to use twitter, of course maybe because I can't afford the internet on my phone along with the newest smart phone so, I don't deserve to have people knowing what I'm doing every minute of the day as it happens.

It was that at one time my love of video games, knowledge of the internet etc made me a geek.

Now everything I love is main stream and they have taken it to heights I never dreamed of. Nor am really interested in. I love the internet but there is such a thing as too connected.

I find the topic of this thread amusing, because I am on facebook, yet I don't exist.

I'm actually contemplating deleting my facebook all together.

It's too much hassle. I might have 300odd "friends" on there but they don't really give two shits about me. The ones that do I actually physically go out to talk to/call them.

Hell I updated my facebook to say that I had taken hubby to emergency and out of the 300 odd people ONE person asked if he was ok....ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure if I left facebook I would lose contact with a lot of people. But what does it matter. IF they cared to keep in contact they shouldn't need it to stay in contact with me. I still have a phone and an email.

In fairness to your friends, if they have over 300 friends themselves, your status updates may not be consistently showing up on their news feeds. Especially if they haven't bothered or don't know how to adjust their settings.

I have adjusted my settings so that my news feed shows the most important people in my life, and I don't get all that news crap from my friends who play Farmville and the like. But until I figured out how to do that, I missed a few important status updates. Faceook doesn't know that I want to see pictures of my best friend's new baby more than pictures of my old high school boyfriend's new car.

Just that I'd offer that as a possibility. I don't want you feeling badly about your friends.

I am undoubtedly in the older crowd here. Yes, I have Facebook, I have my friends on it, but we mainly post photos and family news to each other. Otherwise we just call each other, go shopping together, eat lunch, stuff like that. But most everything is done by phone or face-to-face with us.

And I cannot bring myself to Twitter.

All of my friends go shopping together, eat lunch, stuff like that. We just use facebook to arrange it cause it's a ton easier. Want to set up a party? Just make an event, invite whoever you want. Beach day? Create an event. Post pictures. Etc. Plus you can talk to multiple people at once.

The other issue is, even though we have FB, we rarely visit it on a regular basis.

I am one of those people who hasn't figure out those settings yet...course i haven't played around with them too much beyond just having everything private to the outside world.

I have Facebook, as it gives me another way to keep in contact with friends and family, but I still use e-mail and the phone. Most gatherings are planned through Facebook, unless it's something like a wedding where mailed invitations are what etiquette requires. It's often easier to post pictures than it is to e-mail them, especially if there are a lot of pictures.

The only social site I'm on is facebook. Around 90% of the people on my friends lis are either from CS or the meat loaf world. The remaining 10% are my close circle of friends and family whom I interact with mostly in the real world. FB is useful as a tool for sharing pictures and the like. However a lot of my friends don't use it and I think expecting them to use it for my convenience is just not on.

I actually dropped all but one of my coworkers from my Facebook because while everyone was all, "You should add us on your facebook" only one of them even sent me a message asking if I was okay when I was home for a month with Bronchitis.

I gotta ask what's the meat loaf world?
