  • PFB vs M3C

Figured I'd go ahead and make a thread here for it.

cos it's turning into an interesting dramarama.

pretty much over at pfb the main letter - and some of the responses - are along the lines of suggesting that all the regs at m3c are sheeple who gang up on people
along with comments against the m3c admin

over at m3c it's a bit of speculation that the letter writer is a former disgruntled member or perhaps the actual letter writer who threatened suicide. especially since the original thread was removed by admin over a month ago (14Feb) because of the suicide controversy. It's also speculated that it's someone who hasn't been back recently, because the current members of m3c all know about the new ruleset (3 strikes and you're out, no resets ever)

however there are of course those who defended the m3c posters at pfb
as well as those who agreed with some of the letter writer's feelings over at m3c

Unfortunately I do not have access to the discussion on M3C.

      thanks =)

yep you have to be a member at m3c to read the comments there.

which is also how i know some of the people replying at pfb are in fact active m3c members.

you *can* access some of the pages via google cache, but only after the thread has aged a little, and it often only pertains to the original post and not the replies.

as requested here's the m3c discussion

        http://community.my3cents.com/showTopic.cgi?id=18577

unfortunately, as stated above, you do have to be a member to actually read it, and it has not yet gotten into google cache yet

The second comment to that letter very much reminds me of how things were on a music-related bbs which I posted on back in the day.......short version is that there were a few members who continually caused problems, and the guy who ran that part of the site seemed reluctant to do anything about it, and (unfortunately) even encouraged these members' behavior at times.

though, for those who don't go to m3c much, things have actually changed there in the last couple of weeks.

On the consumer pages, right above the reply box they have the following rules posted:

Please do not post personal information regarding individuals. Solicitations (commercial or non-commercial) are not allowed and will be removed. Thanks!
Also, as per what Admin has said on the community pages, the 3-strike counter is forever.

Unlike at PFB where you get 6 strikes that reset to 0 after 6 months of "good behavior" these strikes never reset.

You can't blame a website and its more-or-less anonymous posters for someone's suicide attempt after reading comments on one letter. If it actually happened, it may have been a contributing factor, but someone who is unstable enough to attempt suicide over this was unstable long before writing the letter. Now, granted, to keep on hammering at someone after they claim to have taken pills is cruel and heartless, but then much of the internet is. Not that I think it's right, but people will say things on the internet they would never dare to say in real life, or using their real name (including, potentially, the person claiming to have taken the pills).

(All that said, I have not read the original letter or comments in question; I did hear about it at the time, probably through CS, but I am not a member at my3cents and by the time I saw it the letter had been removed from the public area of the site.)

I have started an account at M3C so I can see the forums, but it still won't let me. Do I need to get a star first or what?

i don't know how long it takes to get in to the forums.

it use to be it took some time to get in, then they opened it up so new accounts could go to the community side right away,

but now it's back to a waiting period.

i think it may have been because some of the new people were getting "offended" if someone disagreed with their complaint, and they tried taking the fight into the community forums by stalking various people, or starting rude threads.

or it could ahve been the whole pfb thing too.. not sure really.

If it's the letter I think it is, I do think the comments were harsh, but that was just one instance where members have been assholes. I think PFB is much meaner than M3C. At least the starting comments in the first letter were somewhat supportive, but if that was on PFB, all they would hear is condesending crap about how they should have used cash or that it was their fault blah blah blah.

Well, to be fair, the "you should have used cash" / "credit cards are evil" comments are generally from one guy, who posts it on any letter involving a credit card complaint whether it's relevant or not (not every credit card complaint is evidence for the evil nature of credit cards). He's annoying and another regular has started responding to his posts with a comment about how long he's been using credit and never been bitten in the ass by it (I never have, either, in ~15 years of having credit cards).

PFB used to be much meaner until they started moderating comments better. Though now they don't let you post some things that really would be constructive criticism and helpful to the letter writer, because some letter writers get offended by it.

heh im betting a few more posts will be deleted soon too.

some of the posters seem hell-bent on taking their personal fights into PFB.
