Because They can't handle the truth!

    Score!

Seriously though, people join the army to do what needs done. In the army that's inseparably attached to killing people and breaking shit.

I think most people join the army to defend their nation, for the financial benefits, or even to gain a skill and see the world. I don't think most join for a legal way to kill people, or really, we should want people in the army who are only joining because they want a legal way to kill people. They are psychopaths.

We're not talking about why people join, rather what they do once they have... and that's killing people and breaking shit. The two things an army does in order to achieve it's goals of defending the nation and so on.

I was referring to the armed forces in general, Hobbs, commonly and collectively referred to as The Army because it's easier to say

If I was being specific to the Air Force I'd have but crater-making on the list of stuff you do

Usually it's refered to as the Military.

Why don't you just keep this little Air Force phrase inside the Air Force? You've obviously offended a few people. Just don't say it anymore.

Everyone knows what the military might have to do at times, especially now that the US is at war. But that doesn't mean the average person is comfortable with it. And the average person shouldn't be comfortable with it. Killing people shouldn't be treated flippantly.

Those in the military can say what they need to say to do what they need to do, and that may include a little black humour. The problem here is not that people don't understand what happens in the military, it's that you haven't recognized that most people are not in the military.

I'd suggest you stop joking about killing people while hanging out with the general public. I think you'll find that it's inappropriate in most social situations, and that is why you're getting the reaction that you do.

It's not like I walk up to random people and tell them this. I only joke with people I know. I expect them to at least know my sense of humor (it's a bit black even without military jokes). I've actually heard worse from the armchair generals around campus than what I've heard in the actual military. The only exception is enlisted people, but enlisted people are funny no matter what.

Actually were talking about what his plans are for his air force career, which apparently aren't to become a pilot, or a mechanic, or something like that but to kill people. As many people as possible, and I bet he says this with a glassy look in his eye while licking a knife (some of that might be a joke)

I do want to be a pilot, actually. The rest of your comment isn't even worth entertaining.

Hey, I know he was just being an ass, but I think saying stuff with a glassy look while licking a knife would be hilarious.

"I need to buy new shoes"... *lick*

                            or

"The square of the length of a hypotenuse is equal to the sqaures of the length of the other two sides"... *lick*

                            or

"I'm licking a glass knife"... *lick*

                            Try it!

So tell people you want to be a pilot when they ask what you want to do in the air force.

Pretty sure that's a pretty common first thought when someone says that their in the Air Force.

                                It... really goes without saying.
