So, this has happened a couple of times. I'm in the Air Force. Almost all my non-ROTC friends know this and (mostly) respect my decision. The only real problem is when they ask me what I plan on doing when I get commissioned. I'm usually joking, but I answer with the Air Force phrase of "break stuff and kill people." They, for the most part, are shocked/appalled at this admission. I just want to throttle them sometimes. I mean, what do you think those things on the wings of our planes are for? Why do you think we're taught hand-to-hand combat and given weapon's training?

I think it's more that you are blunt. They may be looking for something more like fly jets, helicopters, predators. Not kick ass and take names in style.Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. The contrary opinion that violence doesn't solve anything is merely wishful thinking at its worst. - Starship Troopers

o_O So its ok to kill defensive people in a plane, buts its wrong to defend oneself from bullies? I'm confused man.Toilet Paper has been "bath tissue" for the longest time, and it really chaps my ass - Blas

As someone not at all knowledgeable about such things, I wonder how useful hand-to-hand combat is supposed to be in the Air Force. At least, it makes for an interesting mental picture"My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."

Well it's useful to our ground crews, as well as our Combat Air Controllers and other SOF groups. Our Security Forces benefit from it when securing an airbase, as well as when they are in QRF (Quick Reaction Force). Similarly, any airman can be augmented into SF or the QRF to fill holes left due to other airmen being infirmed, TDY, or casualties.

I seem to remember them having a pretty funky pistol shooting style (laying back firing between their legs O.o odd... but damn did it ever work) If there's one thing I've learned studying up on the US military (to say nothing of other nation's) it's that things are almost never cut and dry...All units: IRENE
