  • Was it fair?

Odor calls are vitally important in my line of work if someone smells gas our goal is to have a tech onsite in a matter of a few hours.

Not placing an odor call is grounds for immediate termination.

While I was out sick one of my coworkers was fired for that very reason.

    Today I was spared.

I apparently screwed up in placing the odor dispatch or the system glitched we do not know. My boss listened to the call and hears me place it get all the information correct repeat it back and everything. It seems clear that I did place the call but for whatever reason it wasn't in the system and thus wasn't sent out.

My boss went to bat for me saying how meticulous I am at my work how much I am a stickler for detail and how I should be kept. I not only get to keep my job but I am not even getting a writeup. This isn't bragging I feel more freaked out than anything and will be watching it even more so in the future.

The question is was it fair that I was kept when my coworker was fired?

If it was proven you did everything possible so that it should have gone out and didnt because of a glitch, and it was proven that he/she didn't do it, then yeah. It was fair. They didn't do job. You did. It's pretty simple.

There is no way to prove that the glitch wasn't me. It just appears that I did do everything but the mistake could still have been mine.

Yeah, but does it appear that your coworker did everything they were supposed to do as well?

Well, that's always true to a point. Thing is, all evidence (and there's plenty of it) points to the problem not being you, so the logical conclusion is: it wasn't you.

Therefore, provided the other person actually did fuck up, it's entirely fair.

No it looked like the other person just screwed up and didn't do it right.

I think mostly I was amazed that my boss went to bat for me it would have been easier for him to just say, "Ok he's gone"

Why? Even asshole bosses can see the benifet of LONG term employees. I'm guessing the training for you guys is pretty long at least, and if one can do said job correctly without any mistakes for months and years, then yeah.

Your basically cheaper to keep then to get another employee that may or may not be even half as decent as you. The other person made a mistake without trying to correct it or do it right.

Your job is for safetly of others. Some of those leaks can be dangerous. You kinda save lives.

Face it, would you want a fireman that's trained, or a fireman that has pyrophobia?

Either way pyrophobia is bad. How can your budding wittle fire possibly prove itself if it never gets the chance to do battle with the firemen?

                          Just an update

*does an arm pump and throws in a hell %&^^%& yeah* So I proved that I am worth keeping and that his faith in me was not misplaced today.

I had a person call wanting to discuss a bill. Well unfortunately the bill was in her old roommates name so I couldn't but she mentioned that she thought her other roommate had called to put service in his name. I adv her that I couldn't see any requests to put service in a new parties name (something I can tell her as general information).

Most reps let it go at this which is fine don't get me wrong there is no reason to see anything weird about this we get the, "but my roommate put it in his name" call all the time.

However for whatever reason I got a bug up my butt and went to the section where I can see every comment for this location and noticed that a new person had submitted an application online for service at this address.

However when I used his phone number from his application to find the account we set up for him I found that we put him at the wrong address.

This is bad for the following reasons:

                          1) More work for the billers because they will have to go back and correct bills for multiple parties.

                          2) We will upset the customers who receive a closing bill and start to view us as incompetent making future interactions with them less pleasant.

Luckily I found it before the billers had changed anything over corrected the pending order called the guy confirmed my correction was what was needed and wished him a very nice day.

                          Can I get a booyah?
