  • the racism of feminism

found this article on twitter, and frankly I'm disgusted at how true it is.

Violence should never be "acceptable", "culture" should never be a valid excuse for violence, and if you consider yourself a feminist, you should stand for the rights of those that haven't gotten as far, pull them up until they can stand on their own.

Let's get this straight once and for all – a man who beats his wife is a criminal, and for the protection of the rights of all women, he must be punished and his actions condemned. Full stop. If you think this should apply only to white women and care nothing for the plight of your non-white sister, then you are a racist. Full stop.
Yes this speaker had to argue against supposed feminists that DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS WRONG! They were defending it being allowed under sharia law in Britain. Because "it's part of their culture", no culture can be WRONG. And no it's not "insensitive" to say that, humans don't differ between cultures, we're all human, and all deserve to be treated with dignity, and not live in fear because of what gender we happen to be.

Except that all to often they do, for years many countries have been giving exemptions to religious organisations for no other reason that it's a religion and makes it a protected class.

Unless you happen to be Christian. Then you can do whatever the heck you want.

Ironic considering the article is about domestic violence being legal under sharia law

Yes, it totally is part of their culture. Women being considered weak, stupid, and powerless is often a part of our culture. Or do they not actually realize that they're in a 'culture' too? Do they just assume westerners have no 'culture,' we're just enlightened and perfect, and we are above 'culture'?

Sorry, what I was referring to was that if some Christian sect comes forward claiming that they beat their wives (or mistreat them) for some Biblical reason, then apart from say, this board, and a few other people, not a lot of people would care.

On the other hand, mention "Muslim" in connection with ANYTHING and suddenly they're backward by about 200 years.

Umm, yes they would. A lot of people would. Every non-Christian would, and so would most Christians. My old church would, and they were very backwards in a lot of ways, but they would never, ever, ever condone wife beating or any kind of physical abuse.

If you honestly think that Christian sects can get away with shit like that in public perception just because they say they do it in the name of their religion, take a look at WBC, who are reviled by everybody ever.

As someone who comes from a Christian background, I take offense to this post. It's statements like this which spread the myth that most Christians condone violence against anyone else.

Get your facts straight before you start painting all but "a few other people" as people who don't care about Christian sects beating women.

There are Christian groups that are very outwardly and boldly misogynist.

However, there is more than just 'a few people' providing a backlash to that.

But I still agree that there does seem to be less strength to that backlash, however, I think that the media narrative is as much a part of that as 'People just don't question Christians.'

The WBC isn't considered a Catholic group by most people.

And lookie here: A peaceful protest at a Google office by muslims sparks outcry but a near murder by Catholic Greeks which was headed by a Greek MP and observed by Greek police gets barely a response.

Yes... I'm sure the Westboro Baptist Church is definitively not Catholic by any stretch. Especially considering Phelps condemns Catholicism as a "devil worshiping sect."

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't see anywhere in that article that mentions Catholics. Golden Dawn is not a Catholic group, but rather a neo-Nazi group from what I can see. It appears to have ties to Greek Orthodox, but that is not Catholic.

Ah, i understand the confusion then. I've never heard of Golden Dawn before, but I do know that GO & RC are extremely similar in core beliefs, especially the beliefs on the Eucharist. Both faiths hold that it isn't just symbolic of the Body & Blood, but actually becomes it.

I don't remember it so much, but my mother remembers one of our RC priests who use to invite GO priests to join in with the Mass sometimes. About the only difference she noted was that they asked for blessings for different bishops etc, rather than the ones we normally named.

So, it's not exactly surprising to me that the 2 faiths might be confused with each other.

But back on topic, it is a quandary is it not?… when two protected classes clash. Which wins out? Rights for women or rights to freedom of religion?

Kinda like when the "Ground Zero Mosque" was a hot topic, on one of my other message boards someone suggested building a gay bar next to it, just to see their heads explode in outrage… and to see which group got more support as a protected class.

Well, yes, of course WBC isn't a Catholic group. Did anybody say that we were talking specifically about Catholics? I thought we were just talking about "Christian sects" for which WBC would definitely qualify.

Personally, I think that if your religious beliefs have you inflicting harm (mentally or physically) on another person then no, that particular belief should not be protected.

                              ~HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION~

If someone man came up to me because I was wearing a low cut top and some very well fitted pants and started to beat me up because his religion dictated that he must to "punish the harlot" (or whatever) then I should be able to press charges and he should not be able to hide behind his religion to get away with it.

Anything that has one inflicting any kind of harm (be it physical, mental, or in blocking of rights) on another person cannot be protected. Everyone's right to a safety trumps any religious dictation of inflicting harm.
