  • Cramps

So I was on the Depo shot for almost 7 years. Glorious years without a period. Then a little over a month ago, I started Lybrel, the Pill that is a continuous 28 day dosage with no placebos (so still, no period, YAY!). Lybrel is not fool-proof and many women still experience break-through bleeding or mini versions of periods, but that's usually because they were either not on birth control before taking it, or they were on a Pill that still allowed a period. Since I hadn't had one in years, it was an easy transition and my doctor felt certain that I'd probably not have any bleeding as long as I take my Pill the way I should.

While I was on Depo, I'd occasionally experience a slight cramp or two very slightly similar to menstrual cramps, but they never even required medication or activity or action. They barely lasted more than a few minutes.

This past Tuesday and Wednesday nights, I had cramps that were almost exact reminders of what real menstrual cramps felt like when I had a period. In fact, I was so terrified I was actually going to start bleeding that I ran off to my locker and got a pad (I bought emergency supplies and always keep some in my purse, locker at work, and in the bathroom closet here just in case). There was no blood. But the cramps, they were awful!

They were the same as when I was a teen. They branched out from my lady-bits to down my hips and down to my knees. I could barely stand up straight and do my job. I went to sit for a second to finish something, and struggled to get back up.

I took ibuprofen and went to lunch break. Yet when I returned, I was still cramping like crazy. I made another trip to the bathroom just to be sure nothing had escaped. Wow, these close calls are starting to get annoying.

Two hours later, even though it's not good, I took some more ibuprofen. And they still did not even numb a bit. So once I got to my parents' house, I grabbed the kitten and snuggled up for nearly 3 hours, and I felt a little better.

Thankfully, I've only had a few twinges since Thursday morning, but I'm hoping this does not become a monthly or on-going symptom of this medication. It's on the list of side effects, so it's not like it's something to be in dire worry of, but it's annoying. And wow it's uncomfortable.

Ooh, those kind of cramps are brutal. I'm impressed that you managed to keep working. Usually they have me on the floor or over the toilet vomiting in pain.

Reminds me of before I went on the pill, I used to get really horrible cramps that would leave me curled up in the fetal position on the floor whimpering. Hopefully you just need a month or two to let your system adjust to the new hormones and they'll disappear or at least not be as severe in a few months...

If you get them again, try Aleve instead of ibuprofen. If the cramps are bad enough, you can even get a prescription-strength version from your doctor.

Aleve is a great one I swear by it for every kind of ache and pain. Also heat helps...a hot shower, heating pad....whatever.

Also, are you getting enough calcium? I've noticed when I drink more milk, it makes a huge difference! Cutting back on caffeine, sugar, and sodium, and increasing calcium and water intake might help.

Milk gives me acne, so I don't drink much of it I take calcium suppliments, though. I drink lots of water.

Noted, I will get Aleve instead of ibuprofen when I go shopping this week.

Blas, I your body cannot handle milk why don't you try soymilk or almond milk. They also have calcium in them as well and they are usually equal to milk.

As for the cramps. Mine was not as bad as yours but I can understand the pain. Before I got back on my birth control pills I would be very close to whimpering and wanting to curl into a ball under my desk. Nothing seem to work to stop the pain either.

It's not that I'm lactose intolerant or anything, the hormones in milk (especially skim and 1%) are well known for driving us oily people's skin crazy and inducing more oil and more breakouts.

I don't care for Silk much anymore, I used to drink that stuff like crazy, and it's not even affordable anymore.

I've found that proper hydration has a major effect on whether I have cramps or not.

Wait, which cramps are we talking about?

Hahahaha Greenday! Hydration usually helps with any and all cramps.

As for me, I use Midol for my cramps/water weight gain/headache/whatever. Aleve doesn't do anything for me. If I have aches and pains, I use Bayer Asprin. (And even then that's iffy). Now, I've been getting migraines along with my periods & cramps. Such fun. NOT.

Soimething that's helped me is decreasing my sodium intake a few days before my expected period (which helps with the bloating and sore breasts, too).

My cramps aren't nearly as intense as they used to be, ever since I started going to the gym every day. Exercise is a cure for many things.

I have digestion errr....issues, so I bloat no matter what I eat. It never fails, within a few hours of my shift at work, I've got a little paunch and sometimes all I've eaten is tuna and a banana!
