We're on a pretty tight budget so we buy food as and when we need it. I specifically buy expensive items like meat when they've been put on the clearance shelf because its getting to the end of its shelf life. So long as its never been frozen before I'll quite happily buy a bit extra and put it in the freezer.
My Grandfather was a butcher, his rule was "trust your nose" when meat is past it you know about it.
When it comes to vegetables I've got a neighbour that grows their own, I slip her a few quid and she lets us help ourselves, at least that way we know its completely fresh.
Milk and eggs I'm a bit more careful with and more inclined to go by the use before date. Although if you fancy taking the risk eggs that have gone over float. So in theory if your eggs sink in a bowl of water they are safe to eat.
