Omigawd, Kara, I wondered why they had a woman guarding male prisoners. That always seemed strange.

There are several female officers. The most badass Captain at our facility is a woman (though she's more of a man than any men I've ever known). So it really isn't uncommon. I think at least half the staff sargents are women, in fact.

In Illinois it isn't that odd (but may not be the norm) to have female guards at co-ed and all male prisons. I don't know about ones like Stateville or Tamms (both Super-max), but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few female guards at those two.
