I have a feeling that I know who you're referring to regarding the scammer situation. Most of that has been taken out of the hands of the CS.com mods and someone else has been collating evidence (including stuff from Ree/Raps and anyone else) before plastering it all over on a blog for everyone to see.

No, I am not the blog poster, but I did back her up with a ton of information that helped blow said scam wide open. The blogger has reported it to SCAMwatch down here in good old Aussieland. If anyone else wants the link to SCAMwatch, please PM me-you can report anonymously.

I think I have the same suspicions (about the same person) as the_std. I'm usually pretty dumb about stuff like this- I like to think I can take people at face value, but obviously you can't on the net- but this poster's stories are just very neat, and their presentation of themselves is a little...theatrical.

I'm kind of proud I am not being so naive anymore. I just hope I'm not slandering someone, even if it's only in my head.

If all you're doing is saying their stories sound too pat and they seem to 'heroic' then all you're doing is expressing an opinion. And if it's about the same one others have suspicions about, then just know it isn't all in your head.

Um... um... well I never actually said I was a robot or in castlevania I just wanted to spice it up a little.

I'm actually out of the loop on this one. I don't always tend to pay attention to who said what in forums I just straight read the content.

It's worth noting that we're all exceptional somewhere on the excitement bell curve of life. Most people are within the first couple of sigma deviations (I did stats and probability way back when school was required, and it's one of the few terms I remember), and occasionally we have tales that take us to the edges of the curve. If you're always at the edges of probability, you're going to get our attention.

We've started to clamp down on the worst of it, but we seem to be attractive to bullshit artists and scammers of late. Whilst the FTSTS rule was necessary, it's had an effect to protect this sort of bollocks, and I'd like to see things swing back a bit. You've probably seen some of that happen on the board.

One thing I will say - if Ree says she can smell something off in a post, I listen.

The galling thing is that when obvious contradictions or bullshit is pointed out, some people still insist on believing it.

It reminds me of another site started out with lots of funny conversations that rang very true. The that site gradually devolved into a place where the stories always have a convenient ending. You have to look pretty hard to find something that rings true there now.

Nobody wants to see the same thing happen to cs.com. The people who are venting about ordinary stuff that really happened should not feel that their stories aren't good enough.

I saw an image of some text a few days ago about a middle eastern woman get all racist in a supermarket queue, to which the cashier began to dress her down for being a made up story in a fictitious store in a town that did not exist etc.

Some of the notalways sites feel like that.

                    edit here it is.

I don't think a bit embellishment hurts a story. If I may quote:
The Mole was a good listener, and Toad, with no one to check his statements or to criticise in an unfriendly spirit, rather let himself go. Indeed, much that he related belonged more properly to the category of what-might-have-happened-had-I-only-thought-of-it-in-time-instead-of ten-minutes-afterwards. Those are always the best and the raciest adventures; and why should they not be truly ours, as much as the somewhat inadequate things that really come off?
Of course I enjoy the stories I can believe the most, I just think the art of storytelling allows for a certain artistic freedom.

I'm not shelling out every month for a storytelling site for self-aggrandisement. Whilst I'm not blind to what you're saying, we're running something where people can vent about true occurrences to gain catharsis and possibly useful advice from others in similar circumstances.

Raps - I would never, ever say something in the thread, or anywhere public enough to constitute FTSTS. I simply think it in my head, until you get to a point like this where it seems to be a majority of the people are trying too hard, and then I explode on an appropriate forum such as this one.

Like I had said earlier, though - it seems to be a bit of a timing thing, as well as a wave. It comes and goes. Occasionally there are nothing but posts from reputable, old members, and occasionally it's all convenient hero-worship stories from newbs with three posts.

It's just frustrating to see people fall for the more obvious ones. But that is the nature of the internet, unfortunately.

While I never believe anything on the not always site (except for the one story my sister submitted) I believe all of the clients from hell stories.

I posted over on CS today about scammers and prank callers... nothing extreme. Just something that annoys the hell out of me. When I was younger sure, I would make exaggerated claims. But that was before I joined either forum.

Life is crazy enough I think without exaggerations. I would not make up a CS story just for the hell of it. Seen to many real cases of suck that I don't need to. But yeah, I remember the library story and remember calling bullshit in my head.
