It's polymer, it's pretty and it depicts important Australian people or places on it .
(Our $10 note is the most awesome because they microprinted "Man From Snowy River" on it)
The CSIRO (the Aussie institute of scientific research) invented the polymer banknote. The ability to print micro-writing on them is one of the security features.
Canadian bills are becoming polymers now too; the hundreds are already changed, the 50$s are changing soon if they aren't already, and the 20's, 10's and 5's will change in the coming years.
Plus we're ditching the penny this year.
And we supposedly are actively looking at a way to have untrackable digital currency; basically a fob of some sort that has an encrypted transaction algorithm to increase/decrease the amount stored on it, and otherwise it would have no idea who uses it. (Don't lose it, because anyone picking it up would be able to spend it). It wouldn't be tied to any bank accounts though; you'd have to go to a cash machine or use something else to reload it. (Think of it as a true digital coin purse)

The 50's have reached circulation. The 20's should be occurring in a few months. By the end of (I think) this year all new bills will be the polymer ones.

Cool.
The reason why I mentioned the $10 note specifically is because it actually has the poem microprinted on it. ALL the other banknotes just have "Fifty dollars' "Twenty dollars" etc. printed on them in microprint.
I have such a man crush on Canada and this news only strengthens it.
"So, my little Zillians... Have your fun, as long as I let you have fun... but don't forget who is the boss!"
We are contented, because he says we are
He really meant it when he says we've come so far
