    Too last minute to cancel the big date?

    The prom thread reminded of me of a stunt a friend of mine pulled...quite a long time ago actually, but anyway...

    This is back in high school. Guy gets a prom date with some girl. For whatever reason, he's not real big on going to the prom and sort of adds his own little escape clause, basically saying if there's a chance he can't go then he can't go and that's that.

    While I understand the disclaimer and all that, he wound up ditching this girl the day before prom. Now, at this point, I don't care if he had a notarized contract and a team of lawyers and the supreme court with him - a day before is too late to bail on that.

    Anyone else feel that way?

    If he had it in his mind that he wasn't going, yeah thats messed up. If he wanted to go and it was a true emergency (ie, being sick, death of a family member, etc), nothing you can do about it. If you don't want to go, then don't go. And to the people forcing them to go, shame on them. I was basically forced to go, and I left early. Waste of my time.

      Bailing out on your date the day before is a totally douche move, particularly when you admittedly never really wanted to go in the first place.

      I always thought prom aws a huge, boring waste of time and money. Nothing I've seen or heard has managed to convince me otherwise.

        I'd agree to that opinion if we were talking about the Junior Prom. The Senior Prom is supposed to be the one last big party of the year with your friends before you go off into the real world.

        For a lot of people, it's the last time they'll see their friends. Prior to Facebook, it's the last time they'd communicate with them at all.

          Wouldn't that be the grad night party? Which I did attend and which was actually fun.

          I've seen the prom vids from my high school, and it apparently consisted of the pretty and cool people being pretty and cool for a captive audience.

            That's fine, but it is a big deal for a lot of kids. Although it's prior to graduation, it's a milestone of growing up in America. (Our proms were for both the junior and senior class, and sophomores and freshmen could be guests.) Junior Prom was kinda lame, but my Senior Prom was a blast. I got to hang out and dance with my close friends, and it was one of our last parties together. (ETA: I went to a very small high school, which makes for a completely different experience, and I realize that.)

            More on topic, considering the amount of cash that goes into prom (formal wear, hair and makeup, flowers), it is really, really, incredibly shitty to bail on someone that you've asked to the prom.

              Saw this on Judge Judy... cant remember the details though. I can remember her berating the guy for not going and it was the night of when he ditched.

                  At my school we just had Junior Prom. I believe the idea was to free up Seniors for other stuff, like paying for their class trip, graduation stuff, etc...

                    It's a douche move, to be sure. Especially considering how expensive prom is for people what with hair and clothes and whatever other fancy crap they have to have. Personally, I think it's a lot of nonsense and probably wouldn't have gone even if I weren't homeschooled, but it's a big thing for some people. No one wants to be the person minus one on the big night.

                    Hell, I invited a guyfriend to a casual dinner at a restaurant with my coworkers and he didn't show. I was the only one sitting next to an empty chair, everyone else had someone, and it was incredibly awkward and I was pissed off for weeks. If I'd known he had no intentions of showing up, I probably wouldn't have gone.
