  • What else is there for me to do?

I'm 24 years old, I've got no job, I have three friends left in my area (One is always busy, one is only available on weekends but the only thing we ever do is just drive around and chat, and the other just talks about how much she misses her ex-boyfriend). That doesn't leave me with a whole lot of options. I go to the movies every so often but that is expensive and it gets lame going alone. I try to go bowling, but if I don't have anyone to bowl with, I can't pace myself and I don't do well. The weather's been crappy so it's not like I can do anything outdoors (Not like there was ever anything to do outdoors anyway). I've become extremely good at MW3 and on a regular team death match game, I usually dominate everyone. But I can only play so much and it gets lonely.

So that leaves me with one option that involves socializing with people: going to the bar. I've been going to one specific sports bar to watch the Rangers play and until tonight, they have been undefeated while I've watched their games at that bar. The only time I've gone out when I wasn't watching the Rangers was last Friday and I went out with my sister and her friend. I met another of her friends there and I plan on asking her on a date but what is there to do? My mom tonight just said it's bothering her that I keep going to the bar and that it's not healthy. Yea, drinking isn't too healthy, but neither is sitting in the house all day and night, every single day, doing nothing.

So just tell me, what exactly is a 24 year old supposed to do to be active and social that's actually fun?

      None that I'm aware of.

If you live in even a mid-size town, there will be some sort of activities list somewhere. Parks and recreations is a good place to start.

New Jersey (provided your location is accurate) isn't exactly the middle of nowhere. Considering where you spent the last year, I'm surprised you don't have more things you want to do that you weren't allowed before.

You say you have someone you want to ask out, but there's nowhere to go.

You say you want to go bowling, but you have nobody to go with. (I'd love to, but the damn teleporter is broken again)

This is probably a stupid question, but what would happen if you asked her to go bowling?

See if the girl wants to go out to a movie and then bowling afterwards. Who knows? You both might have fun. When the weather clears up, see if she wants to go out to a nearby park and throw a Frisbee around.

Find some volunteer work in your area, maybe?

If you can't commit to anything long-term, see if there's a charity event that needs planning or fundraising volunteers for a month or so. It's a good way to meet people and build your resume, too.

                  I shop. Too much.

I feel for ya though, GreenDay. I'm moving back home in less than a month, to a much smaller town, albeit not that far of a drive away. Giving up a huge gym that I love to go to, my own peace and quiet.......to have to go back to sharing a bathroom and being closer to the idiots I work with. And sharing a house with loud people who argue all the time. So yay, 12 hours of arguing at work, 12 hours of arguing at home.

Remind me again why I didn't jump off a bridge yesterday.

Things I wanted to do that I wasn't allowed to in Afghanistan:
                    • Get Laid? Check
                    • Have a drink? Check

Well, I was planning on calling her tonight to ask her to go to this bar not too far from her for dinner. It's a low key place. If you order a beer, you get a free bar pie (pizza). They also have ski ball which is awesome.

I've done karaoke before. I'm usually pretty bad but if I'm with a group and we've all been drinking, no one cares.

Good luck! I hope it goes (or perhaps "went" would be a better tense) well.

Your very short list of things you missed while away reminds me of the one birthday party for an adult we did when I was with McDonald's. He was in the military (I don't remember what branch), was returning from a tour in either Afghanistan or Iraq (again, don't remember)... and, of all the things to complain about, he'd been telling his family and friends he missed his favorite fast food, which was us. (No, we didn't make them eat Happy Meals and wear paper hats.)

No matter how bad you think you are, I'm sure I've heard worse. You haven't experienced hell until you've sat thru 8 minutes of a completely tone-deaf person butchering "Stairway to Heaven."

That's a terrible karaoke song. I stick to a strict guideline: Not too long, middle to low range pitch (easiest for me), and something that the crowd knows and is going to sing with me. Sweet Caroline is a perfect one.

It's technically against the rules for Americans. The only way you are legally allowed to is if it's with your spouse. And you have to be married. Dating and/or engaged doesn't count. You aren't even technically allowed to have a member of the opposite sex in your room unless the door is open (Though according to a JAG I spoke with, this means it just doesn't have to be closed. So resting against the closed position but not fully closed is okay.).
