Choosing *exceptionally* non-illustrative examples

I just read this, and was so strongly struck by a pair of sentences that I had to tell *somebody.*

The man and woman complement each other and can bring forth new life. An example of a good family is St. Joseph, the Virgin Mary and the child Jesus.

I don't intend this thread to be about gay marriage or religion; there are plenty of those already. But if you're making the argument that marriage must be between a man and a woman because that's where children come from, and you want to support that with a biblical example (though it's hardly necessary anyway; we all know about the "birds and bees" already) why pick the *one* family in the whole book where it didn't happen that way?

Perhaps she is trying to say that even when the actual father or mother isn´t present in the family life. being raised by a man and a woman is still better than the alternatives?

i dunno, skullking, that seems like alot of thought for a fundy. they probably flipped through the bible looking for a traditional family dynamic and that's the closest she could find. because many of the marriges described include multiple wives and harems and incest. can't be promoting those ya know.

even better fallicious argument I'm dealing with on FB-"same gender marriage will lead to incestious marriage" person is arguing that allowing mixed race couples =/= same gender couples as a social issue, and is denying that 26 states allow the marriage of first cousins.

maybe not, it can be her opinion, without she having though a lot on it.

Maybe it is something simpler as in, "the holy family had a father and a mother so that is the ideal". Even if the father isn't the actual father.

I respect the christian faith..that being said. Depending on what interpretation you use..Jesus' life could be on Jerry Springer. Woman has secret relations with somebody not her husband, the child turns out to be its own father (the god = jesus that some believe)...heck all it needs is a DNA test, a fight to break out, and people yelling "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!"

I literally laughed out loud when I read the example given in the OP. Maybe if they had used Joseph, Mary, and John...but even then, we know nothing about how he was raised or his home life, so it's still no proof of a "good family".
