A lot of people dealing with life imprisonment have said otherwise. Especially with the knowledge that no matter what they do to improve themselves, they know the only way they're getting out is with a toe tag.

As long as live persists, there is always hope. Their sentence could be commuted, the law that they were convicted under declared unjust, or any of myriad other possibilities. Is it likely? Perhaps not. But if it's that or suicide? I'll take the long shot, since it can't reasonably get worse. But underneath it all, one fact remains - as long as you live, things can change. Once you die, things stop changing for you - dead is dead, and there's no changing that.
