  • ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This thread got me thinking about how many situations we've been in where the only answer we ever got from anyone was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

I have encountered some. One was when I asked my sister for help with fixing my PC after getting a virus that made explorer.exe refuse to start automatically, leaving me with a blank screen and whose effects seemed to evade multiple anti-virus scans done in safe mode. Her response? "You're the computer expert!" (which was, in effect, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). I DID, after all, major in computer science in university.

I ended up backing up my data and reset my PC back to factory settings.

What about you? Who gave you the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and why?

I sort of got that reaction from people on the church's personnel committee, back when I was the secretary. (this being during a brief meeting I had with two of the women on the said committee)

The personnel committee (and our then-pastor) had come up with official job descriptions for the various positions, and some of what they had down for my position was NOT well thought-out.

One of those things being that if I was unable to come into the office, I was responsible for finding someone to cover for me. Problem was, I was not allowed to give out copies of the building keys, or the alarm codes. The personnel committee also apparently hadn't considered what to do if I was NOT able to find someone to cover for me.........when I had to meet with the two committee people to review the job descriptions, I got a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ sort of reaction when I brought that up.

At a church service I went to a few years ago, the pastor announced that 1) there were so many sets of keys to the building floating around that nobody even knew how many there were or who had them; 2) would those who have some and don't really need them please turn them in; and 3) the doors are being left unlocked too often, so be more careful when you leave.

Not the sort of information I'd want widely known, myself; I'd lean more towards changing the locks and quietly giving the people who legitimately needed access a new key and a talking-to about locking up.

actually, for a church, i could see it- the thing is, there is usually *supposed* to be a sense of community within a congregation, which would normally prevent someone breaking in,

Depends on the location. I've seen a few churches floating around that are all fenced off to prevent vandalism/abuse whathaveyou. Some manage to disguise themselves by simply having the logo of the faith on the outside or a cross nearby, but you kinda have to know it's there. (My grandma used to attend a church that did just that: it was the "Corner shop" of a strip mall, with the other spots being the room for Sunday School, a little bakery that specialised in cakes, a dance studio (where my friends and I used to peek in at the girls doing ballet ) and a couple of "empty" shops. They've since relocated elsewhere)

By "logo" i mean that for instance, the UNiting Church of Australia has a very distinct logo on the outside of their churches, ditto for certain Anglican chuches.

That is the way the Catholic church that I went to as a child was ---- unlocked during the majority of the day. Unlocked before 8am Mass and not locked until well after dark.

Granted the neighborhood was not that bad (yes back in the day you could actually walk the streets into the wee hours of the night and have no trouble)

NOW 50 odd years later and my old neighborhood is a border line getto and everything is locked up tight ALL the time.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

I got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the Twilight Zone.

Two years ago, I interviewed for a job that required travel. The interviewer told me that I would have to go as far as Roxboro, NC. If you have been reading some of my threads on CS, you'll know I've done a lot of traveling. Driving to Roxboro was absolutely no problem.

They decided to give the job to someone else. A month later, I take a job at the local hospital. Three days before I start, I get a call. The other place asks if I'm still available. No, I was no longer available.

I have an idea what happened. The person they took decided that he didn't like to drive, so he quit. They should have taken the guy with the travel credibility. Oh, well.

That stupid fucking shrug (pardonnez mon francais) is what I constantly get from my boss when one of the few worthless coworkers of mine are off on another extra break or wandering the halls or sneaking in an extra face stuffer in the cafeteria or playing on FB in the bathroom, and my boss will point at machines with red or yellow flashing lights (since they've been abandoned), and when I ask why I have to cover or why I have to work so many machines.

And I also get that stupid fucking shrug when I tell my supervisor and my manager that no one can keep up with the OT anymore. Going on the 6th straight month of either 6 day work weeks or 6-12 extra hours during the week (or both), everyone is about to kill one another........and that's the look I get.

I got it from my bank when I asked them where my new debit card was, after four months of going back and forth on it. Shockingly, I'm now looking for a new bank. Any Canadians with suggestions? Grr.
