    I don't have enough knowledge of psychology to give an informed answer to that one, save to say that a genuine criminal generally knows that what they're doing is wrong and that they shouldn't do it. A mentally ill person probably doesn't have that defence.

      For one, Clinton was always pretty politically expedient. Two, at the time the voice of the people didn't want gay marriage. Sad, but true. The tide against it is really only starting to turn now, and even then, it may be another 10 years before it's really a mainstream idea, instead of the controversial one it is today.
