My thoughts: Here we go again with making a big fucking deal out of her nationality. Please, news people: SHUT THE FUCK UP. She is a lady like any other woman in this country. Let's just make sure she is truly eligible to hold the post (unlike some of the sketchiness of Obama's credentials that a lot of people seemingly overlooked).

This is another thing that if the people who need to approve her don't approve her, there's going to be a lot of screaming of "racism".

I'm already part of the group saying that one of the reasons she was picked was because she's a woman and because she's not white. And it's true. No white male was going to get seriously considered for this position.

Because there are 8 men and 1 woman on a court that is supposed to represent the whole of the United States of America. From what I've seen and heard, Sonia Sotomayor is exceptionally qualified, is a brilliant constitutional scholar, has experience in multiple levels of the judiciary, and, yes, she is a woman and she is Latina. So, President Obama was able to find someone that was exceptionally qualified and make a LOT of Hispanic and female voters happy at the same time. And he's tied the hands of Republican legislators who pretty much have to vote her in unless they want to lose even more of the Hispanic vote which they desperately need. (Hell, Republicans need any votes they can get right now.)

Needless to say, I'm pleased with the decision, and I've been very amused at the media's attempt to find anything negative to say about Judge Sotomayor. Which so far has resulted in two brief soundbites taken out of context. Right.

They aren't so much whining, but making a big fucking deal out of the fact she's Latina. Just like they made a big deal out of the fact Obama is part black.

Who cares what nationality they are? Make sure they are qualified in all respects (including place of birth if applicable) and vote yea or nay. That's all that needs to be done. The media circus should just say "Sotomayor is the nominee for the Supreme Court Justice position. Her qualifications are 'blah blah blah' and she is a more liberal leaning pick". We don't need to know she's Latina, from New York or that she worked her way from poverty. That's all fluff. Hell, if they wouldn't have announced she's Latina, I wouldn't have noticed. Even with the last name.

I wouldn't say it's fluff. Her life experiences will affect her decisions on the court, like it or not. The fact that she is Latina might affect her if an immigration issue comes before the court, the fact that she is a women might affect her views on abortion, and the fact that she worked her way up from poverty might affect a lot of other decisions. When she goes before the Senate, her entire life will be put up for the Judiciary Committee to question.

And, well, the media needs stuff to talk about to take up time.

Sad because it's true?

I think she's a fine choice. She's extremely qualified for the job so I don't mind her getting it. But there's no doubt about it that a lot of candidates weren't considered at all because they were white and because they were male. I think diversity is a good thing, but the truth of the matter is, she was picked because she's female, not white, liberal, and the most qualified under those parameters. Do I care that she's a woman and latino? No. The only thing I care about is that she is competent. But those were the guidelines for picking the new justice.

I'm just saying that as soon as we knew we were going to need a new justice, and that we have a liberal president, we were not going to get yet another white male Supreme Court justice.

Yep. The new cool thing to do is look over the white male. And it is because of "reparations" or "equal opportunity" or "affirmative action". Employers are even afraid of employing a white male because a woman or minority can sue and call racism or sexism. If a white male goes to do that, it gets brought up that the ratios aren't right for male vs female, white vs black or whatever.

I'm just curious about how we are going to go about diversifying the Supreme Court. Are we going to have to specify what sex and race we must go for like we did this time?

Expect either Stevens or Gingsberg to retire/die within the next year or so. The qualifications for the next will be a mandatory homosexual. There was a lot of talk leading up to this nominee about this justice needed to be homosexual and even more talk that this nominee didn't need to be a lawyer or judge that there hadn't been a politician on the SC for quite a while.

So I wonder if I disagree with her decisions and opinions and therefore oppose her confirmation am I still a racist/sexist???

What about Kennedy and Scalia? They aren't spring chickens, either.


And for the second part: a lot of the mainstream media would make you out to be. Just like if you were against Palin, you were sexist. Or against Obama, you were a racist.
