...on the Arkansas Governor's Office?? WHAT? Has Hell froze over? Are pigs flying??

    http://www.governing.com/node/1739/

From what I've seen - at a distance - Governor Beebe is doing a fantastic job. Much like President Obama, he was left with a complete MESS, and Beebe seems to have cleaned it up pretty quickly. (Governor Mike Huckabee was completely and totally incompetent). My one criticism is that he hasn't taken more steps to override the ban on unmarried couples/single people adopting or fostering children.

I just can't believe that in this time when state budgets all over the country are in the red, that Arkansas of all places is actually doing pretty well.

We don't do much fer book learnin', but damnit, we can count.

Seriously, though, Beebe is an okay guy. He spent some time hanging around here during his campaign (one of the major state newspapers after all) and he was one of the very few politicians who actually engaged me in some kind of conversation that wasn't purely "Hey, vote for me! Hey! Hey, vote...hey vote for me!" Not to mention he seems like the type to take you out back and whip your ass with a switch if you get too damn ornery.

Even though he calls himself a Democrat, I'm not sure he's precisely that. He's not really a Republican either. I don't know what to call him exactly. Maybe he needs to start the Compromise Party or something. He is pretty known for a little of column A, a little of Column B.

Huckabee wasn't terribly incompetent though. It was more like a whole bunch of shit went wrong at once and he couldn't block all the kicks (which I suppose you're supposed to be able to do as a politician so yeah...). Plus once he got all into the big healthy-craze thing and started talking about forcing mandatory exercise programs on the populace, it went pretty much straight downhill from there. A nice guy, though. He's a vague acquaintance, visited my mom in the hospital a couple of times while he was still a preacher. Just...strange. LOL

Yeah, I got to meet Huckabee once when I was in high school. They did this thing where the valedictorian and salutatorian (me) from each school got to go to the Capitol and get your picture taken with the Governor and First Lady. Nice guy, but he kinda screwed over education...big time. When I met him, he asked me where I was going to school, and I said Arkansas State. "Oh, my son went there, nice college". I wanted to say, "Yeah, why not send a little state money our way instead of giving it all to the University of Walmart?!?!?" Governor Beebe spoke at a friend's graduation from ASU, and one of his promises was to even out the funding situation in the state. I had already moved, so I'm not sure how that's worked out, but as a former Trustee...well, one can hope.

I got to meet the Governor when I was in 6th grade, too. Governor Jim Guy Tucker. I swear, ONE freakin' year earlier, I could've met a President. But noooooo, I get to shake hands with a felon.

I've met one governor of Illinois. The one that ISN'T a criminal. Hell, the last governor not to be a criminal (and ironically the one not from Chicagoland).
