  • Gibson's Bakery awarded $11 million vs Oberlin...

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2019/0...berlin-college

    TL;DR:

After the 2016 election, an underage Oberlin student was caught trying to purchase and/or shoplift wine. He was confronted. Gibson's bakery was then accused of racism. Oberlin college, the jury found, assisted in protests and the assertion that the bakery was racist.

So the bakery sued the university.

And they won $11 million. They could win up to $22 million more (if I'm not mistaken) in punitive damages.

The punitive verdict is supposed to be rendered today, if what I'm reading is correct. It could be up to an additional $22 million.

Also, based on what I'm reading, Oberlin had an opportunity to make things right before it even went to trial. If what I'm reading is correct, the bakery offered to drop the lawsuit, if Oberlin put out a public statement and letter to the students of Oberlin that the bakery (and by extension its owners) isn't racist. Oberlin refused.

      Edit:

They were hit with max punitive damages: https://legalinsurrection.com/2019/0...s-bakery-case/
