that sounds a bit..hmmm I dunno Racist maybe

    racism definition

The belief that some races are inherently superior (physically, intellectually, or culturally) to others and therefore have a right to dominate them.

We're not talking about oil fields or wealth or who can invade who for shits and giggles, were talkinga bout a fucking name.

We put the word 'America' as an integral part of our nation's name, first. When looking for a contraction of that name, 'America' works best, and is therefore the most used. Likewise, when attempting to refer to people from 'America' it's a logical progression from 'America' to 'American' the same as Mexico to Mexican. That's the terminology we use to talk about people from the US of A. People the world round use this terminology knowing that there are other countries on the continents.

You make it sound as if there's something special about the North American continent that we're somehow denying you by calling ourselves American. There isn't, it's just the name of a continent.

        'American' isn't a race.

If you read what he said, it'd be pretty obvious if people want to affiliate themselves more with some other country than America, then why the hell are they here?
Why do you assume they want the other affiliation MORE? They just want it included, that's all. Or do you have any evidence otherwise?

I'm tired of the whole "We're America too!" BS from Canada and Mexico. My Latin Geo teacher once brought up, "I dunno why the US calls itself the 'United States of America' cuz you also have Mexico and Canada." It took all I had not to call her out that we were the first, so we get dibs on what to call ourselves.
No, it's simply because "United Statesian" sounds stupid.

If others want to learn, teach them but do go out and push your culture on others who don't want to take part in it.
Who, exactly, do you claim is doing this, and in what way?

I have to agree with draggar. I know that there would be fights and lawsuits if there was an Anglo-American club, but a African-American club or Mexican-American club is perfectly fine. You can have the NAACP which the c stands for colored. But you cant call someone who is black colored or the dreaded N word yet they refer to themselves as such. Hell my friend from Eastern Europe calls any one not white, black.

Personally I would like to see all tests in English only after all isnt that the language that won out over German. That is one reason I hated Cali... Not because there is a huge Hispanic population but because damn it please for the love of all that is holy speak the language of the country your in. That was one of my Uncle's biggest pet peeves. People from Mexico not speaking English in the US. He was proud to be from central Mexico but he taught himself English because that was the language here.

I love languages but I am a firm believer in speaking the language of where you are. A family's culture is important but so is the one that you moved to. I am a firm believer of integrating not assimilating.

But there should be no distinction, if it is wrong for x race it is wrong for all. I am a mutt I am a smidgen Irish, Indian, African, English, and French... But most of all I belong to a race that trumps all that I am of the human race. I am a citizen of the United States.

Kimmik, my grandmother was from the US and didn't speak a lick of English. So it's not just "people from Mexico" that speak Spanish.

There was a debate a while back about the NAACP. The 'C' was there back when it was formed in the 50's, where "colored" was the common vernacular, not just for blacks, but for people of any ethnic group. The organization decided to keep the 'C' because it was part of their history and origins as an organization for all groups of 'color.'

Stores used to have CHRISTMAS sales but people complained because they felt it didn't include them or was against their culture - so now it's holiday sales. (FYI - I am NOT a Christian).

(Some / Many) People in Miami who REFUSE to learn English but expect me to learn Spanish because THEY were from a Spanish speaking country - I've even see this in stores that I support. I need a translator just to get some work done in some of my stores.

(Some / many) People crossing the border from Quebec (Canada) into far-northern New England refusing to speak English (even if they know English) and demanding everyone they deal with speak French.

Neither is Mexican to be honest. Mexicans are the descendants of Spaniards and indigenous people.

To be blunt there really is only one race and that is human.

I never said it was just from mexico..

My Uncle had issues about those from Mexico that did not learn English, I have a problem with any nationality coming here and not speaking the common language. Or drivers test in a multitude of languages.

As for your Grandmother may I ask what language she spoke? Was she raised in the US, go to US schools? I know my grandfather had his language beaten out of him... to teach him English.

My grandmother was from the US...so yes she was raised here. She didn't go to schools because she was raised on a farm. They didn't really trust schools, however, because they were administered by whites.

I would like to point out that although it's illegal for any store or place of business to refuse service to anyone on the basis of race, religion, gender and a bunch of other criteria, it's perfectly LEGAL to set up a members-only private group that can be as elite as you want (i.e. all white or all black or all women or whatever).

As long as they don't get government funding. Many do and it doesn't exactly help that the line was already blurry as hell in some instances.
