  • Only in Maryland...

    http://www.abc2news.com/news/local/s...-PSn2ej1w.cspx

So basic gist of the article for those who don't want to read it.
A school district in rural Utah had their lawyers review state law and discovered that their block on non-pornographic LGBT websites (such as say HRC.org) was in violation of state law (I know, I was shocked too) and they of course, removed the block to bring themselves in compliance with state laws. Now the parents are outraged that the school district has decided to allow students to learn about LGBT issues by removing the block without consulting the parents first.

    Umm, what?
That's right, the parents are outraged that the school district would follow state law... you see, keeping out The Gay (tm) is more important than following state law apparently

‘In a time when so many predators are out there, I think it's wrong for a school system to advise children if they have questions about their sexuality that they should visit web sites.’

The two have nothing to do with each other. What a douchebag.

There were also a number of people who spoke in support of the board's decision Monday night. ‘It's hard to live in diversity but that's what our nation embraces; it takes fortitude of freedom and respect for all,’ said Rev. Lisa Ward of Havre de Grace
      This is one great Reverend.

Fits in well, though, with... which state was it someone or other was promising to arrest any teachers that obeyed the law about sex education?

            Wisconsin.

I'm happy things are fairly quiet in Arkansas these days.

Opponents say they've gathered almost 700 signatures -- calling for the board to allow parents to vote on the issue. ‘This should be the parents' decision and not the board of education,’ said Barbara Connolly, who came to the meeting to speak.
              I love this.

This person thinks that it's up to her, and the other parents, to decide whether or not the school will obey the law.

Hey, lady, there already was a vote on this - in the state legislature. They're the ones who get to decide the issue. Not the Board of Education, and not the parents.

If you don't agree with the law, then lobby your legislators to change it, or vote for their opponents when election time comes.

But you don't have the power to decide that the law doesn't apply to you. It doesn't work that way.

‘I was shocked that something like this would happen; a decision would be made without any meetings or public notice about it; without any parental input on the situation,’ said Del. Rick Impallaria, a Republican whose district includes portions of Harford County.
              This man IS a legislator.

              That's what frightens me.

One of the people responsible for making the law is basically saying that people don't need to follow the law.

"Parental input" . . . ? To what purpose? Even if all of the parents in the community were opposed to it, how would that change anything?

"Decision" . . . ? What decision? The school's policies were in violation of state law, so they changed them to bring them into compliance with the law. Doesn't sound like much of a decision to be made to me.

                  It is?
Sorry, mea culpa, I found the link on the Equality Utah website and thought I recognized the county as a Utah county and didn't double check my information.

OK, can we change the title to "only in Maryland"

I was wondering why the hell Havre de Grace was mentioned...
