Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican Army over invading French forces of Maximilian I in the Battle of Puebla, 5 May 1862.

In Mexico, it's mostly celebrated in the region around Puebla.
The celebrations for Cinco de Mayo in Pueblo and here in the US are two completely different things. In Pueblo, they celebrate the victory during Batalla de Pueblo. It is strictly a regional thing, no different than some parts of this country celebrate particular battles from the Revolutionary or Civil Wars. Cinco de Mayo in the United States is a "holiday" to celebrate Chicano pride. It was picked to be that date because that battle became associated with patriotism and national pride.

Unfortunately for the vice principal and some of the posters here, saying that these kids did it to spite a group of people assumes facts not in evidence, unless the kids actually came out and said that's what they were doing. Simply wearing a flag of ANY nation should not be an inflammatory act to ANYONE.

I wonder if I'd get kicked out of class if I randomly wore a German flag on my ball cap (gotta love velcro, tac-caps FTW!) during the 4th of July?

If one group of students is permitted to express their pride due to former nationality/heritage, so does everyone else. Since I see no mention of any rules actually having been broken, I don't see what the fuss is about.

To be offensive I think it would need to be a British one

I think it's more for general provoking response than anything related to the event.

                  German - Nazi
                  Israeli - Muslim

(Though I think Iran would get a much heavier response considering Israel is an ally of the US, and predominately Jewish as well.)

I just have to wonder if the school took all the American flags out of the classrooms for that one day.

You're really going to pretend that the kids involved DIDN'T specifically wear the shirts to be all "Cinco de Mayo? WE'RE IN AMERICA, USA, USA!!"? If they normally wore shirts with the flag on them, and happened to choose them that day, that's one thing. . .if they specifically put them on to be contrary, that's something else.

So their not allowed to express their patriotism because all patriotism is inherently racist and intended only to demean others?

*face palm* Of course it isn't. However actions can have more than one connotation.

I wear a hawaiian shirt on a Tuesday it's cuz I love Hawaiian shirts. I wear the same shirt on Hawaiian pride day then it implies that is where I am from.

Plus if this was a planned protest then at least one teacher knew it was going to happen which means they all knew.

Nevertheless, the assumption has been made that the expression of US patriotism was bigoted for no other reason than that it occurred on a day related to something else. As if it's impossible that they just wanted to be proud to be American while everyone else was busy being proud to have come from Mexico.

The assumption has been made that it was an expression of US Patriotism. I see lot's of teenagers wearing shirts with the USA flag on them and all it means to them is, "I like Old Navy".

My little brother had a ton of those and it had nothing to do with patriotism.

At least two of the kids are hispanic from what I heard. I guess they should have known better, its only okay for them to be proud of where they came from, not where they live now.
