Sorry for the delay in responding. Busy weekend.

That sounds a lot like the status of someone who is here legally as a resident alien. But under the proposed amendment you would extend that to everyone including people born here of American citizen parents.

So everyone would have to earn citizenship, not just immigrants. And all children, regardless of where they were born or to whom they were born, would not be citizensl because they are too young to meet the requirments.

    Do I have that right?

It's intriguing and definitely food for thought but who would decide what would be on the test? The government?

And how would we reconcile a couple of centuries worth of thinking that certain rights are inalienable with the idea that they should be earned?

I'm not disagreeing with you, mind you. I often feel the same way about my fellow citizens sometimes. I'm just curious if this is workable or if there's any way to sell it to the people who would have to agree to amend the Constitution.

There would be no age requirement. You could take the citizenship test at any age.

And yes, the government would pick what's on the test. They've been doing this for years so I don't see why it'd be an issue.

Right now, the US is being overrun with illegal immigrants. There needs to be a point where the US says "No more" and starts enforcing current immigration laws or, like Arizona, make new ones that actually tackle the problem instead of covering 9it up like it doesn't exist.

Or we could take measures to figure out why people are coming over here illegally and try to fix it. Make it easier to get green cards, work visas, and student visas.

But it just feels so much better to protect our tax dollars by building a useless fence (that costs, what, a million dollars per mile?) and discriminating against everyone that looks vaguely hispanic.

The last time we overreacted to "Teh Meskins!!" the Mexican-American War happened. We all know how that ended up

But nobody would be born a citizen at all, including the children of citizens. That might make it a tough sell since parents aren't about to change the Constitution to strip rights from their children.

You're right. If the hurdle of getting such a Consitutional amendment passed in the first place could be overcome, I agree that wouldn't be much of an issue.

How would you overcome two centuries of American belief that certain rights are inalienable and not earned?

And to bring this back on topic. The Arizona law denying birth certificates is clearly unconstitutional and therefore cannot be legally enforced. I predict it will be repealed quickly once it hits the courts.

And since it was passed right after a law where everyone is required to HAVE proof of citizenship on them at all times, there's no sense in passing a law keeping US citizens from acquiring the documents they need to compy with the other law. It's ridiculous.

There must be better ways to handle the problem.

The Mexican American War ended with America gaining large territories, and was fought because America wanted those territories and used a border dispute as an excuse.

Plus, I don't think anybody here opposes legal immigration. Why do you think illegal immigration is okay?

Did I say that? No. I said, "I will not support overtly racist laws nor laws that circumvent the US Constitution..." You even quoted me.

The Mexican-American War is a lot more complicated than that, but you did okay for a base summary.

Florida is working on a similar law but it's not as proactive as AZ. If you're stopped or detained by the police they can check your status and if you're here illegally, you're sent back.

I also quoted where you said "PS: To all the Anglo-Europeans, I'm really sorry your reign as dominant race is coming to an end" which implies that the Anglo-Europeans are trying to stop all brown people from crossing the border which is not true and that it is okay for illegals to cross.

Please tell me the real reason for the Mexican American war.

Ugh, I really don't want to write that paper again. Go get a book or something. Better yet *digs into files* Ah, here we go! Look up "Legacy of Hate: The Conquest of Mexico's Northwest" by Rodolfo Acuna. Also look up "The Mexican War: A Study in Causation" by Norman A. Graebner

My "PS" was in reference to someone's "Oh noes! The Mesikins are takin over!" comment. I stand by what I said. Maybe they'll drive all the white racists away.

How is he saying illegal immigration is okay? he's implying that the anglo-europeans are losing their dominance, whether he means the nation or the world. How is that saying "I support illegal immigration"?

Actually you could but you had to be licensed to do so and it was easier to be approved if you did service. The assumption being that there is strict tests and such done before your approved for parenthood.

Also if you had to take a citizenship test to be a citizen here when your born here? Where would you be deported to?

People have already addressed that if you failed the test you would continue to live in America but with fewer rights

                                Haven't we tried that already?
