  • Way to tow the party line

    http://www.smh.com.au/federal-electi...726-10r77.html

Penny Wong, the Minister for environment and also the only openly lesbian cabinet minister says she supports her parties ban on gay marriage because of a ''cultural, religious, and historical view'' against it? As in the same cultural, religious and historical views that wouldn't have allowed her to vote let alone bocome a member of parlimant had others not rebeled against them?

And then there's her position on climate change, this coming election is looking worse and more farcical as it draws near.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to be off chasing down the last little bit of sanity I had that just fled at reading that.

Isn't Penny Wong one of the advisors from Sim City?

Hobbs, you just made me choke on my drink.
though, I'm pretty sure it was Penny Wang (it has been a while since I played SC3000, I'm loyal to SC4DE now)

There have always been members of repressed minorities who are in favor of the status quo that represses them. It happened with women's suffrage, it happened with the civil rights movement, too.

Also, slightly OT, but the topic should say toe the line, not tow.

Just to make it clear, Penny Wong is our Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water (yes, water). Peter Garett is our Environmental Protection, Heritage and Arts Minister (if the name sounds familiar, he was the frontman for Midnight Oil).

Either way, there's an election coming up on August 21st, Australia is currently being run by a woman (nothing wrong with that btw) and that pretty much sums up our currently political climate.

Usually the Greens have been more favourable towards gay marriage in the past. Hopefully the Australian sex party can further that argument (I am not making that up either).

There's nothing wrong with having a female prime minister, in fact it's pretty cool, but I really don't like this particular female prime minister and hope she loses the next election. This really pisses me off because I've always voted Labor until now (she's head of the Labor party - kinda like Democrats). I just don't agree with how she came into power (I voted for K. Rudd, not her).

I'm having to search out the main points the Greens and Sex parties are bringing up. They're looking to be my new favourites.

Gah. I have to do an absentee vote coz I'm still out of the country. Stupid failure to vote fines.

Having a female prime minister for the sake of having a female prime minister is a stupid reason.

, but I really don't like this particular female prime minister and hope she loses the next election. This really pisses me off because I've always voted Labour until now (she's head of the Labour party - kinda like Democrats). I just don't agree with how she came into power (I voted for K. It's Labor, no 'u'. And (this is more for the non-Aussies out there) unless you live in Queensland (for his senate seat) or in his electorate (for the House of Reps), you didn't vote for Rudd. You voted for your local Labor member. Rudd became PM because Labor held the most seats in the House of Reps, and he was the leader of the Labor party.

The way things are trending, Gillard may well end up being one of the shortest serving PMs Australia has had. Or, given Rudd's love of travelling early in his reign, end up having the dubious honour of spending more time as 'acting' PM than as PM.

The Sex Party is getting my senate vote this time around, hopefully they get enough to get a seat for Victoria at least. The Greens have, IMO, lost their way, throwing their weight around for preference deals that they will have to sacrifice their morals for.

I live in what is considered a 'safe' Labor seat, so my HoR vote will probably go to an independent with preferences to the Liberals. (who, for .usians, are conservative... go figure)

Sorry. I wasn't paying too much attention to spelling (note to self - don't write replies while at work).

The only reason I say that I voted for Rudd was because I was a 2nd time federal voter. During the 07 election, I was friends with a lot of undecided 1st time voters. I remember the interview that helped make their decision on Labor was Rudd's interview on Rove. He came across as someone who knew how to speak to the younger generation, especially at a time when Howard seemed completely unwilling to 'lower' himself to our level. Rudd came across as a more personable candidate, so more people (particularly those 1st time voters) voted for Labor leading to him winning by a landslide.

What a lot of people had a problem with was, even if Gillard was more qualified than Rudd, her way of taking over as PM was unexpected and cruel. But then again, that's politics.

I'm most probably not voting for Labor simply because of Gillard. It's a petty reason I know, but I just don't like her.

Who's currently looking as the strongest party right now?

Strongest? Neither, IMO. Labor are dealing with daily leaks that are personally damaging to either Rudd or Gillard, depending on who was embarrassed the day before. Abbott is keeping his head down while they carry out a bitch fight during an election campaign, and looks weak for doing so.

However, polls have Labor's lead closing quickly. Last week the parties were pretty much neck and neck on a prefered party basis, which means it comes down to marginal seats. With the gerrymandering after the last election, I'd say Labor are still slight favourites, but with such a reduced number of seats, they will be relient on theGreens for support.

Labor would probably get my vote back if they'd get rid of this stupid internet censorship plan and at least consider legalising gay marriage.

Don't hold your breath. As things stand, Labor need both the Greens and the two independent senators to get anything passed in the upper house. One of the independents is from the family first party.

Both of your pet policies are opposite to what Steve Feilding wants. Since Labor need his vote elsewhere, you are, as they say, shit outta luck.

Of course, once the election is over that might change. But that's a little late for you and you vote...

Since my last post, in response to the dropping polls, Gillard has come out saying that she intends to take control of the campaign and show the 'real Julia'. Which begs the question, exactly who have we been seeing so far?
