a random thought re:Mubarak in Egypt

OK, hearing the Mubarak on the radio today and one thing crossed my mind, silly as it is...

Now, before I say this, I want to say that I do believe that he should step down, I believe that he should turn power over to the people, I believe that he should get out and leave the country before something worse happens...

But his speech today...

That took balls.

To ignore the will of the growing crowds of people calling for his removal. To ignore the warnings of all the leaders from around the worlds saying he should step aside. To stand up in front of a country of 80 million people and say "Y'know what? Y'all wrong! I'm stayin'!"

That took BALLS.



(I know I'm gonna catch hell for this...)

Super Balls.

Power balls.

Über-cojones.

Balls so big that it required me to use two non-English words to describe them.



Yes, it's foolhardy to think that he's going to 'ride this out' and be able to leave the country with his head held high, not running for his life into asylum, cowering in some obscure fara-away country, hoping that they won't extradite him back for a show-trial and nasty punishment...

But for one moment, he showed the world that he has the balls to believe in himself.

But is it balls or self-delusion? He could be on par with Iraq's PR guy during the first part of the Iraq war. Thus far I've honestly wondered if Mubarak actually realises just how much shiat he's in. I'm not sure he legitimately understands yet.

I'm not so sure it's balls so much as unadulterated greed and thirst for power gone to his head and clouding any judgment he might have left.

I think he thinks he has the military on his side. And it appears he is right: The army have stated his support to Mubarak's half move, to de facto leave the handle of power but officially not to resign, calls for protesters to go home. So long as he has the military on his side, the protesters will not get their way.

I was considering suggesting to some mates of mine something about that. We run an investment club, so maybe it would have been an idea to invest in some things over there when the market is suppressed.

Did some more research and it turned out to be a bunch of pyramid schemes.

Mubarak reminds me of this guy, who found himself in similar circumstances...only to be executed. Will the same happen to Mubarak? Only time will tell.

Bollocks. Er, I mean, rubbish.

It was a delaying tactic so as to give himself time to transfer even more money out of Egypt into untraceable offshore bank accounts. Transfers that started about thirty seconds after the first riot.

He was always going to go, but he wasn't going until he had drained the country dry.

Honestly, it takes *weeks* to transfer billions of dollars in a non-auditable fashion.

Agreed, especially considering a day after his "I am not going to leave" speech, he packed up and left. Yes, there was a lot of cheering and flag waiving, but I wonder how much there will be when the public finds out the country is bankrupt?
