It seems that a former legislative aid to the senator, Douglas Hampton, was indicted late last month on suspicion of trying to lobby his old boss on behalf of his new bosses. Which brought up the $96,000 "gift" that Ensign's parents gave to the Hamptons, both of whom worked for Ensign, with Cynthia Hampton working for his campaign.

Of course, they didn't just work for him, it turns out - Ensign and Mrs. Hampton had an affair in 2008, which is likely the reason for the nearly 6-figure "gift" presented to them by his parents.
Ensign, for his part, says, "I stand behind my firm belief that I have not violated any law, rule, or standard of conduct of the Senate." All things considered, adultery seems to be pretty par for the course when it comes to America's politicians. I guess it must be the hush money that is really making waves.
