Our athletic program is profitable. Not the football team. In my particular school's case, the basketball team pays for everything else through ticket sales and related merchandising. As my mother remarked the first time she visited, "Well, damn, that blue chicken's on everything, ain't it?" Other schools, Oklahoma, for example, it'll be the other way around.
