  • WI Gov Walker Quietly Repeals Equal Pay Law

    Article at Huffington Post

Apparently, women being able to make $0.75 for every $1.00 earned by men for the same work is too much for the Republicans in Wisconsin, so they repealed the law that made it feasible for victims of wage discrimination to sue for their due pay.

The only thing SB 202 does is repeal avenues of prosecution for the victims of wage discrimination, so it's not like it was part of some larger bill. It's very purpose is to give big business an easier time exploiting disadvantaged workers with little fear of redress.

What disturbs me is that some women will actually vote for the Republicans and approve of this measure.

For some women, it actually works to their advantage.

I vaguely remember reading an Op-Ed several years ago, about how some women (often housewives and stay-at-home mothers) develop anti-feminist views because they don't want their husbands to face increased competition from career women.

For these women, keeping a patriarchal system in the workplace is actually to their benefit, because it means that their husbands will be able to bring home more money.

I recall the author of the Op-Ed saying that it was "a dangerous game" that these women were playing, although I don't remember why. I imagine it was for reasons like :

What if these women become widowed or divorced, and wind up having to support themselves? All of those positions they'd been advocating will instantly start working against them.

What if the family's financial circumstances change, and they need to have a second income?

If these women have daughters, then what if their daughters eventually want to have their own careers? These women could be hurting their own children in the long run.

When it comes right down to it, it's never a good idea to become overly dependent on another person in any case.

If some women choose to support this measure for such reasons ... Well, they have to do what they feel is right, but I think they're making a big mistake. Even setting aside the moral concerns involved, what they're doing is very short-sighted.

That he wouldn't even try to give a reason for this speaks volumes.

Welcome to Wisconsin. a state that used to be beautiful moderate state where people worked out deals to the advantage of both. NOW a state of "my way or the highway"

and people wonder why the opposition managed to get almost one million signitures to recall this man and to boot recall (now a total of I think) 10 senators (mostly but not all Republican).

what is happening in this state is very unpresidented both in and out of state. both the recall effort and some of the legislation that is being quietly put through (as the repeal in the OP I did not hear anything about this from ANY local source) the hole just gets getting dug deeper and deeper.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

I got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the Twilight Zone.

Wisconsin has been pretty much stuck in the news since the last election. between Walker's God complex and the Republicans fighting the Democrats on every little thing, it's amazing that the people haven't actually started a revolution by now.

The people of Wisconsin have gathered the necessary signatures to recall Walker. I'm thinking they need to go after a few of the congressmen as well.

Take this as a lesson, America.

The next time Election Day rolls around, set aside some time during the day to go and vote. The polls are open for a very large portion of the day, and many will let you in even if you get there shortly after closing time.

That's how these Tea Party loons got into office. Too many people sat out the 2010 election. Let's not let it happen again.
