  • Ryan on the Today show.

On the today show they asked Ryan what loopholes and deductions were going to be closed. Now I am paraphrasing but basically what he said was "We are going to let congress and the senate figure that out." So..wait. You've done the math (according to you), and your tax break is 'revenue neutral', but you are going to let somebody else figure out how to make it 'revenue neutral'. Then how, prey tell, have you 'done the math' if you do not know what loopholes and deductions somebody ELSE will close? Somebody? Anybody? There seems to be a logic fail here...

He's done the math and found that it doesn't poll too well with the people, so it is much easier to deflect the issue and say that other people are working on things. Although quite honestly, I'm more interested in what Romney has to say about all of this because he's the person that should have the plan. Although, I'm not too interested since I already voted.

It also would be true, so far as it goes, to say you've done the math if the math you've done is calculating the dollar value that must be made up by closing loopholes, without selecting which ones, if any, would be able to make up that difference.

It's not particularly useful, of course.

The problem is that the math indicates that many popular loopholes are going to have to be closed along with some that benefit mostly the rich. I could see the mortgage deduction going away at some point in the future (in fact that was recommended in one of the budget plans). Until, they address the discrepancy between the rates the really rich pay and eveyrone else pays, it is all going to be for naught.
