What's amazing, is given all of that is that Michigan is so close for him.
And Ohio, too. Fact is, if Obama hadn't saved the auto industry, Ohio probably would have gone Romney and the election wouldn't be nearly so close.

I'm intrigued. Does anyone who weighs less than a Volkswagen want Mitt Romney to win?
Actually yes. Pretty much half the country does, and many of them have much more legitimate reasons than what Tansi posted.

The real divide we're facing as Americans is not R vs D. It's fundamentally different visions of where our country should be going. The real problem with Obama and Romeny is not that either of them are bad men, who don't care about our nation. The real problem is half the country thinks Obama's path is the right one, while the other thinks Romney's path is the right one. All the demonizing and finger pointing is cover; because without it you'd have to actually explain what you don't like about Obama's vision or Romney's vision and most people lack the knowledge, understanding, or simply time to argue their positions on facts rather than hyperbole.
Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

I'm not voting for Romney. I'm going to go and vote after I leave work today. Hopefully we know the winner by the end of tonight. The suspense is killing me.

I've heard some people say they're voting for him because he ran a business and therefore "knows how the economy works." Some people think he would be better at foreign policy than Obama. A coworker of mine is mad at Obama because of his so-called "apology tour" and is voting for Romney (that's not the only reason he is voting as so). Some people---this coworker, in particular---think Obama has spent too much money and think Romney will get it under control. Thing is, Romney wants to slash taxes like crazy and increase defense spending, and he's not saying how he will pay for any of that. Of course, he is buying into this Ronald Reagan idea that you can slash taxes and magically get more revenue from it.

Now, people who disagree with Obama or don't want to vote for him should not be branded as racists just for that, though I think people who do that are the minority. However, I do think racism is behind a lot of the attacks against him. Is it a coincidence that the first non-white president is bombarded with accusations of being "unAmerican" and is constantly having his birthplace questioned, even after showing his birth certificate?

Here's what I've gotten from the stauch Republicans in my life. Keep in mind, while they are very conservative, they at least think the likes of Donald Trump is batshit crazy, the senators who made recent remarks on abortion are fucking lunatics, and they don't believe Obama is the antichrist that some of the religious right are saying... that said, these are their concerns:

1.) They have great concerns that Obama is more socialist than most people think, and Obama has you believe. They cite his connections to extreme socialist and communist organizations as proof of this. Of course, even if these points have any merit, you can tie just about any politician to many extreme organizations, so this in and of itself is a non-point. When asked why Obama hasn't done anything super-drastic or revolutionary in the last 4 years, they say he's waiting to get re-elected to go "super socialist" and dive the country into socialism on the level of Chavez or worse.

2.) They believe the national debt is going to continue to rise, and will eventually reach a tipping point that will spell disaster for the US. This is a concern I actually do share, although I am certain Romney won't fix it.

3.) They hate Obamacare and support Romney's plan to revise or remove it entirely.

4.) Some do support Romney and Ryan's stance on social issues such as gay rights.

5.) They believe Obama is going to turn America into a country which will discourage business and turn it into an extreme welfare state to the point where, instead of job creation, Obama will simply give handouts to the poor and unemployed and the unemployment rate will remain dismal while our debt continues to grow to epic proportions.

It would make a great conversation-piece for my desk.

I have to admit that I can't understand the whole "gotta vote Republican because I always have" mindset. I'm a registered Democrat, always have been, always will and I have voted for Republicans when I felt that they had a stronger platform than the Democrat candidate. Voting the straight party ticket seems lazy and stubborn. Hell, even my friend's father, who is so Republican that if he were a shirt, he would have to be washed separately in cold water lest he turn the whole load pink, voted for Obama this election. He thinks Romney's an idiot.

I will reiterate what I said back on the first page: My vote will be going to Cassandra Peterson. Unless someone gifts me with a sizable bribe to vote for some other candidate.

My aunt actually convinced my Grandmother to vote for Bush in 2004, "because we can't change Presidents in wartime."

Aunt is staunch GOP and Bush fangirl (wanted a relative who worked for Bush to give her a personal tour of his "ranch" and got upset when he refused). Grandmother was always a staunch Democrat, but got a little senile in her later years and was easily manipulated by auntie.

I've never voted straight ticket in my life, and didn't this election either (though my GOP votes were for candidate in technically non-partisan elections for judges).

Until the moderates restore some sanity in the GOP, it may be awhile before I reliably vote for Republican candidates, though there will always be some exceptions: there's a handful of Dems in my area I wouldn't vote for if my life depended on it.

So I just read through this thread and did any of the handful of posts where the author is voting for Romney actually give a clear answer why? I didn't see one.

Thank you for missing the entire point of the thread.

And it now looks like it's officially a moot point. According to, well, damn near everyone, Obama is the winner.
