The GOP is a dying party with terrible ideas that no longer have a place in the modern world and frankly haven't for decades. But it'll take one or two more election cycles to club this into their heads I'm sure. We'll see if they fall into a civil war amongst themselves over the coming months between what few moderates they have and the batshit crazies.
That's his basic issue; the failure to connect. Had he done so, he could have won in spite of his bullshit.
Originally posted by daleduke17 View PostThe reason a black person voting for a black candidate is less racist than a white person voting for a white candidate is because of American history. Black people have been held back for so long that when a black candidate comes along everyone has to vote for him because he is the minority, otherwise it is racist because having a white person leading a country with black people is just looking back at history and repeating "slavery" conditions. That's probably the reasoning (and I am just playing devil's advocate on that one).
But the history of slavery and Jim Crow is commonly used as an excuse by race baiters to keep themselves relevant and in the news.
Originally posted by daleduke17 View PostIn my opinion, making a big deal out of race IS racist. Making a big deal out of gender IS sexist. There were people in 2008 being called racist because they didn't care that Obama was black. Isn't that backwards thinking? Isn't that just saying the opposite of everything anti-discrimination people have said all along?
Originally posted by daleduke17 View PostThat it doesn't matter what race someone is, we should all have the same opportunities? <snip>I'm just glad that the media isn't spouting the "America's first black President" line before talking about Obama like they did in 2008-2009.
Originally posted by daleduke17 View PostI did not vote for Obama (or Romney or McCain for that matter) because I did not like their views. I did not like being called racist for not caring about someone's skin color, or sexist for not liking Hillary Clinton just because she was a woman.

I watched the election coverage on CBS, and when they declared Obama the winner, he was still a little bit behind in the popular vote: about one-million votes, if I remember correctly. The anchors started discussing the possibility of Obama winning the electoral vote but losing the popular vote and what that might mean for the next four years.
I was pretty sure that Obama was going to win, based on the polling I'd seen during the last days of the campaign. I wasn't too surprised. The election was still quite close, though. I'm not sure why some people are saying the GOP got creamed, shellacked, etc. They just lost the presidential election by a narrow margin, lost one or two seats in the Senate, and a few seats in the House. Seems to be the Democrats actually had bigger losses in 2010.
I know it may sound extreme, but at this point, I almost hope we never have another GOP president again. I know there are nice, reasonable people who vote GOP for whatever reason. I'm not sure why, but they do.

Obama does not have a mandate. He will still have to work with Congress. But winning both the EC and the popular vote gives him more leverage. Boehner has to come to him, not the other way around. That's why he's been posturing in the press lately: he knows it.Good news! Your insurance company says they'll cover you. Unfortunately, they also say it will be with dirt.

A policy that, to me, is full and sufficient reason to vote against *anybody* was stated flat out: "We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers."
I was thinking that after I posted, but I haven't heard any rumors of him actually performing abortions.
As for race... there is one situation where I would have voted based on race (or gender), but it didn't come to that; not even close. In 2008, we had never had any president who was other than a white male. Had every other consideration been balanced out and I needed a tiebreaker, going for a first would have done it.

I only know one person who, of a certainty, voted Republican.
He's one of those people who honestly believes that he's going to be rich some day soon, and that the GOP is going to help him get there.
I also know for a fact that he's very poor at actually checking his facts before making a decision, and if the facts don't match his decision, he'll conveniently ignore them.
Other than that, he's an ok guy; just willfully ignorant if the facts don't align with his ideology.

I was surprised that the Benghazi thing didn't swing the election for Romney. They really played that one up.
Apparently, Obama was supposed to jump in his Raptor, spool up the FTLs, and stop the attack. Sean Hannity had a woman call in who yelled about how the Army has bases in Italy, and if Obama didn't hate America, he would have sent the troops in. Then she started crying. The worst part was, he agreed with her!
