I mean, who wants to vote for the Muslim-Kenyan-Indonesian-Marxist-Communist-Socialist-Atheist-Homosexual-Racist-Son-of-Frank-Marshall-Davis-Son-of-Malcom-X-Married-to-an-Angry-Black-Woman-Married-to-his-Male-Pakistani-Roommate-from-College?
apparently electoral votes aside he got almost half of the popular vote, his 47% comment was suprisingly close.

The GOP is a dying party with terrible ideas that no longer have a place in the modern world and frankly haven't for decades. But it'll take one or two more election cycles to club this into their heads I'm sure. We'll see if they fall into a civil war amongst themselves over the coming months between what few moderates they have and the batshit crazies.
I pretty much agree with everything you said, however, Romney could still have won this election. He lost by about 3 million votes. Many states were won by Obama narrowly, especially the battle ground states. If Romney could have found a way to connect with voters in those states, he could have won.

That's his basic issue; the failure to connect. Had he done so, he could have won in spite of his bullshit.

That's probably the reasoning (and I am just playing devil's advocate on that one).
I strongly disagree with this. Racism is racism. Just because a group has been discriminated against does not justify prejudging the majority group by the same basis. Slavery does not excuse a black person from assuming a bias against a white person on the basis of race alone; only on what that white person says or does.

But the history of slavery and Jim Crow is commonly used as an excuse by race baiters to keep themselves relevant and in the news.

Isn't that backwards thinking? Isn't that just saying the opposite of everything anti-discrimination people have said all along?
Yes, it is backwards thinking. It is only racism if you pre-judge someone on the basis of their skin color, and for no other reason. If you don't care about skin color, you can't be racist. Very few people completely don't care, but plenty of people can look at an individual and ignore the skin in favor of other qualities.

Actually, we don't all have the same opportunities. Many doors are still closed to people based on race, gender, and sexual identity. Affirmative action as we know it now has not really done much to fix that problem, so I'm actually hoping the SCOTUS will scuttle it so Congress can start over.

Just curious, did you vote? (I'm not asking for whom).

Anyone who voted for Romney based on Benghazi jumped the gun. We still don't know all the facts about what happened, and the more information that is released indicates there is little we could have done to rescue our people or predict the attack.

      • I watched the election coverage on CBS, and when they declared Obama the winner, he was still a little bit behind in the popular vote: about one-million votes, if I remember correctly. The anchors started discussing the possibility of Obama winning the electoral vote but losing the popular vote and what that might mean for the next four years.

I was pretty sure that Obama was going to win, based on the polling I'd seen during the last days of the campaign. I wasn't too surprised. The election was still quite close, though. I'm not sure why some people are saying the GOP got creamed, shellacked, etc. They just lost the presidential election by a narrow margin, lost one or two seats in the Senate, and a few seats in the House. Seems to be the Democrats actually had bigger losses in 2010.

I know it may sound extreme, but at this point, I almost hope we never have another GOP president again. I know there are nice, reasonable people who vote GOP for whatever reason. I'm not sure why, but they do.

Yes I did. I have voted in every Presidential election since 2000 (when I turned 18). I think there have been a couple primaries I didn't vote in because I either forgot the date, or wasn't registered in time, though.

I was pretty sure Obama would win the Electoral College, but lose the popular vote. That would have been very, very messy.

Obama does not have a mandate. He will still have to work with Congress. But winning both the EC and the popular vote gives him more leverage. Boehner has to come to him, not the other way around. That's why he's been posturing in the press lately: he knows it.

              • Obama is pro-choice.

For many pro-life advocates, that alone is reason enough to call him a "baby killer."

                • A policy that, to me, is full and sufficient reason to vote against *anybody* was stated flat out: "We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers."

I was thinking that after I posted, but I haven't heard any rumors of him actually performing abortions.
No, but what I remember hearing during the 2008 campaign was worse; something about pushing through legislation allowing actual, already born babies to be set aside and left to die. Which isn't to make any claim either way about whether that was true, only that the claim has been made in a way that would appall even those who are firmly pro-choice.

As for race... there is one situation where I would have voted based on race (or gender), but it didn't come to that; not even close. In 2008, we had never had any president who was other than a white male. Had every other consideration been balanced out and I needed a tiebreaker, going for a first would have done it.

I'm not sure why some people are saying the GOP got creamed, shellacked, etc. They just lost the presidential election by a narrow margin, lost one or two seats in the Senate, and a few seats in the House.
The "social conservative" side lost more than that. All those guys brought to national attention for making rape-trivializing comments lost. All the places marriage was on the ballot were losses for that side. A couple more things that aren't coming to mind at the moment...

I know there are nice, reasonable people who vote GOP for whatever reason.
I like to think there are, and certainly the ones I know seem mainly nice and reasonable... except that you see what happens when you try to ask why they voted the way they did.

                  • I only know one person who, of a certainty, voted Republican.

He's one of those people who honestly believes that he's going to be rich some day soon, and that the GOP is going to help him get there.

I also know for a fact that he's very poor at actually checking his facts before making a decision, and if the facts don't match his decision, he'll conveniently ignore them.

Other than that, he's an ok guy; just willfully ignorant if the facts don't align with his ideology.

I also forgot that he killed Ambassador Stevens in Libya. Some conservatives were saying that Stevens somehow embarrassed the government, or Obama personally, and this was his punishment.

I was surprised that the Benghazi thing didn't swing the election for Romney. They really played that one up.

Apparently, Obama was supposed to jump in his Raptor, spool up the FTLs, and stop the attack. Sean Hannity had a woman call in who yelled about how the Army has bases in Italy, and if Obama didn't hate America, he would have sent the troops in. Then she started crying. The worst part was, he agreed with her!

Hey, if I start crying when I spew completely irrational and self serving commentary does that mean I can get everyone to agree with me too?

Something similar happened in my state in this past election. Except it's the other way around. The Republicans have a supermajority in both the state house and state senate and they also have the Governor. Both US senators and 7 or 9 US reps are also Republican. It's hard to break the democrat foot hold in Nashville and impossible in Memphis. Hmmm I wonder if Mississippi or Arkansas would be willing to take Memphis.

If Mississippi takes Memphis, can we send along West Memphis, too? Not because of racial or political reasons, but because it is a nasty-ass town. Also, Memphis has entirely too much drinking for it to be a part of Arkansas.
