Canadians also react quite poorly to any perceived political bullshit. We're less politically involved overall up here, but much more likely to jump on political bullshit.

Well that's actually a symptom of the same behavior. It's the reason most Americans polled approve of Congress at a clip of less than 20% and yet when polled about their individual Congressman generally approve at at least the clip they were voted in at. They're next to impossible to unseat quite often despite being part of something that only 1 in 5 actually approve of.

Move it to gerrymandering and the problem is everyone cerebrally would probably like an independent third party to do it. However it necessarily requires the party in power to give up power and necessarily antagonize part of its hyper-partisan voting base in the process. Amongst the hyper-partisan, it's a political loser to actually do it.

That's really kind of it in a nut shell at this point, isn't it? The system doesn't work for the country, but those in the system won't give up the power that the system grants them. Even if it would improve the country as a whole.

The corruption is too ingrained.
