CNN has JUST projected that Barack Obama will be the next President of the United States of America!

Granted, I'm not holding my breath until tomorrow morning when every vote has been counted - but whether you're a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, this is history. We are right in the middle of it. This, right now, is something we'll tell our children and grandchildren about.

I am very excited and proud to be an American.

Me too! I don't think I've ever been so psyched over a presidential election.

Looks like McCain conceded. It's over. I really thought I was going to find out in the morning, if I was lucky. Still have memories of the 2000 election that was "too close to call."

        100% backed,

And I applauded John McCain for his speech. I have much respect for him for that speech

Definitely. He was a helluva lot nicer than in his TV ads.

And I have to give him a lot of credit. I did not expect him to admit defeat like he did. I figured he'd pull an Al Gore. Don't get me wrong, looking back now, I wish Gore had won, but he just seemed to be acting like a sore loser.

I think McCain's speech was very gracious, and showed what a wonderful statesman he truly is.

Honestly, I think John McCain would make a wonderful president. However, his campaign was very poorly run, and his 'choice' of a VP candidate was horrible.

McCain will be key in bringing the country back together - and I think he will. I think there is a lot of mutual respect between those two men (not necessarily their campaigns) - something that has made this race so much better than 2004.

Um, no, history was not made tonight. Someone got elected President of the United States. It's happened every four years for over 200 years.

How is this election so damn special?

History is made every single time the POTUS is elected. It's the person who will be in charge of one of the most powerful countries in the world!

I'm not answering the last part because it is obvious sarcasm.

Mostly because it's the one going on now.

Because the first black President was elected. That's a stand-out historical moment. History teachers 100 years from now will be asking their students, "Who knows who the first black President was?"

It's so obviously a historical moment that I have to assume that AdminAssistant was right and you were just being sarcastic.

Nope. Not being sarcastic. I don't give a damn that Obama is part black. He's a person just like the other couple hundred million in the USA. There's nothing special about being black. Black people are people just like everyone else.

That is why I don't think this was such a historical election.

Daleduke, I think you're post proves exactly why this election is so historic... it is historic for it's very lack of historic value... at no other point in our history would a black man being voted into office would people say "so, he's black, what's that got to do with anything".

That and I have to agree with the poster that said that every election has historic value... only 44 people have held the office (I hope that number is right), in 200 years, in a country that currently has a population of 300million...

43, with Obama being 44. But, 219 (1789 was Washington's first year) /4 (election being every fourth year) would equal 54. So, it is pretty close to being the actual number. Really, 42 men have been President (Cleveland had two separate terms) but, that is splitting hairs.

Yes, his speech was very classy, and I applaud him for his graciousness.

At a less turbulent time, he would've been a decent President, but our country is in a crisis, and we need a President who can handle the crisis.
