  • Texas Senator attempts to block abortion bill

    http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/T...?device=tablet

I'm glad she's doing this, aside from the potential ramifications of the bill, she's also showing that Texas Democrats are actually capable of follow through. Of course I've already started seeing irrational hyperbole from my right of center Facebook friends.

Now that's a filibuster....not this lazy "we're filibustering" thing the US Senate does.

Most of the replies are quite sickening, only a few are able to comment logically on it.

According to tweets, the senate police are now clearing the gallery for being disruptive.

The filibuster is currently halted, but the halt is being challenged, so it may not be over, yet. There's a lot of running the clock going on from her supporters, too.

Interesting; I've only heard about this from *left*-leaning people.

              Regardless: good for her!

I saw some earlier in the day slamming it, and the generic anti-planned parenthood images. Later in the day I saw more of the liberal/libertarian sorts post.

Last I saw the vote happened after the time ran out (Twitter post by Mike Ward says it started at 12:02), and the Associated Press has on film the clock being moved backwards to make it look like the vote happened before midnight.

One of her two strikes was related to Planned Parenthood.

Considering the anti-abortion line of "Planned Parenthood literally just does Abortions" then that has got to be germane to the discussion.

The bill's been declared dead now, since the vote happened after midnight.

...Well, that whole affair was disgusting.

And with the bill's death, there was much rejoicing within the land of common sense and the rights of women to have control of their bodies.

Well rejoice a little bit, but because of the nature of the Texas legislature we are just as likely to see another special session so unless they can keep this up indefinitely they're going to have a hard time sustaining this kind of thing especially given the rules in the Texas senate.

Where they may luck out is Perry & Co. may have already gotten the pub they were looking for from their own constituents. The problem with Texas from their perspective is the proportion of the populations that lives in the Texas Triangle which is Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio all of which skew far more liberal than the makeup of the legislature would suggest. Continuing to attempt this bill may eventually depress their own voters and increase presence of the Democrats. It's still a loser for them long term.

The most shocking part of this story was finding out there is a Democrat in Texas. Who knew?
