  • We Need More Teachers In Congress

Representative Mark Takano (D-CA) was a high school English teacher for 24 years before getting elected to the House of Representatives.

I guess old habits die hard, because he decided to take out his favorite tool, the red pen, and grade a letter from House Republicans to House Speaker John Boehner about Immigration reform.

Congressman who used to be a high school English teacher irks GOP by marking their memos with a red pen.

I'm literally laughing out loud reading this.

As amusing and funny as that is, I'd rather they leave the bad writing in their letters and took a bit more time to actually, you know, read the laws they're voting on.

I particularly like the note, "If you don't understand the bill, come by my office and I'll explain it."

The thing is, as the red ink indicates, to fix the bad writing in the letters, the congrescritter WOULD have to read the bill and understand it. He wasn't just marking up misspelled words and bad grammar, he was marking up the content of the letter and looking for evidence that the letter didn't provide.

So in other words, the letter mark up is another attempt to try and make them read and understand the bills they're passing into law. Not that it will do much beside make the meme rounds.
