Barracuda... the Democrats DID negotiate over the ACA. IF they did not, then there would have been a government option, for example. It's just the Republicans want it utterly gutted, if not repealed entirely. You can't exactly negotiate with someone whose version of negotiation is "you agree to what WE want"

Plus, as for the shutdown- why SHOULD Obama negotiate, when what the Republicans want is the reversal of a law thta thye have FAILED to get support for the repeal of.

Oh, and one small note- the ACA is insurance, not government funding of healthcare. Best guess is that the exchanges would close and subsidies for policies would not be paid out.

Hell the Tea Partiers cost the State of Michigan almost 700 million dollars in Federal Funding over this. Our Governor wanted to expand the medicare (or caid, I forget which). Our House of Representatives waffled over it and when they did vote for it, they didn't make it immediately binding (unlike so many of their recent bills that screw over teachers) and since it wont be implemented until April, we miss out on that Federal money. One of them said, "well it's kind of like skipping dessert".

As for the not negatiating with Republicans. That's pretty funny because if the Democrats actually railroaded something through it would have been more like the European model of health care and not the kludge we got. What's even funnier is that this is based on Romney's model for Massachusetts which was proposed by conservative folks years ago. But because it's Obama, it has to be disagreed with.

But still, the fundamental question for all of this, is it worth it to shut down the government over all of this?

Baracuda, could you be so kind as to explain how saying "this law was passed by both houses, signed into law, challenged in the supreme court and found to be constitutional, and then still discussed and voted on 40 times after that with the same outcome every time, it's time to stop beatingthis dead horse and move on" being so unreasonable?
oh and the same polls that say Americans oppose "Obamacare" find that they support "the affordable care act", which just proves that anything can be made to look bad with the proper propoganda. Now, I have no clue what Obamacare will do for me, because it is a meaningless word used to scare thr unimformed, but I know the ACA is what wilk guarantee my aunt and mother are guaranteed healthcare if ever their cancer returns. I'm deeply sorry that my family's health terrifies you so much, but we each have to do what is best for ourselves and our families.

As ACA I had no sausage what it was a bill for, seeing it written as affordable care act makes me wonder if it is the official name for Obamacare and we end up in a situation where ACA is good but Obamacare is bad because Obama.
Just like the furore about Dihydrogen monoxide, it sounds bad and nasty, just look at those words, yet it's just sodding water.

The Affordable Care Act (aka, the ACA) is the official title for what has been labeled as Obamacare in an attempt to associate what is, originally, a Republican sponsored piece of legislation because... well, because Obama.

While there might be rational reasons to oppose the ACA, they almost never get aired because most of those who claim to oppose it only do so because somebody told them they should.

You ought to be on your belly begging for Obamacare. Don't you know the Great and Wonderful Obamay knows what's better for you than you. You ought to be begging to be taxed at 100% or more just for the privilege being allowed to beg. Even though all who voted for Obama didn't read because they just had to pass it first to find out what was in it, and get it in place before that nasty and vile specially elected senator from MA got into office and could help stop it.
Obamaycare is the law of the land and the Republicans should be falling all over themselves to fully fund and even replenish those slush fund account that the IRS can't account for to implement Obamaycare. And any Democrat political crony doesn't want to participate shouldn't have to providing they've made a substantial contribution to the Great and Wonderful Obamay and the DNC.
You need to accept that the Great and Wonderful Obamay is the second coming of the Christ. You should no longer pray to God or Jesus but to the Great and Wonderful Obamay. The sun rises and sets out the Great and Wonderful Obamay's hindend, we are blessed by his very presence on this earth.

Of course I'm serious, I don't know how I was so impervious to the Great and Wonderful Obamay and the DNC all these years??? Just drink the Kool-ade and let them take over and while I slumber and slave along and they'll take take care of me in the manner they deem that I deserve. Oh, no. Apparently there are people who actually believe that stuff and can unironically repeat it despite it being so far outside of truth and reality.

It scares me that people are so unwilling to apply critical thought to the issues at hand. Nevermind the fact that it's a Republican plan to begin with... But as soon as it touched the hands of that evil Democrat/black/Muslim/foreign/communist/invent-ridiculous-conspiracy-here it was tainted and could no longer be supported because... um... Obama.
