  • Shutdown Over

Apparently, a compromise was reached. There are increases on income verification in the Affordable Care Act.

Beyond that, clean CR and debt ceiling extended, the Senate and House promise to work together SUPER 4 SERIAL THIS TIME GUYS, so that we can do this again in a few months. See you in early 2014.

What's nice is the nuke is disarmed, at least for the February increase.

The law that was passed and moved the debt level increase also has a clause saying that "The next debt level increase will happen automatically unless a bill passes to stop it." (Or words to that effect)

So the worst that can happen (Sadly) is another shutdown, but Economic Armageddon is off the table until late 2014.

nice use of their advantage there by the democrats then. Yeah, this is a disaster for the republicans, because a) it prevents them trying this shit again until dangerously close to the next elections and b) it's established the principle that you don't screw with the budget or debt celing over non-budget concerns.

Hopefully they learned that when taking hostages, you can't take one that you care about as much as the other side.

My hope is that the take away here is 'don't take hostages,' and not 'don't care about anything so you have nothing to lose when the other side won't negotiate with terrorists.'

          Still laid off.

Crappy deal that is just going to wreak more havoc in a couple of months.

Nothing of real value was accomplished.

And had to borrow the mortgage payment for this month off my brother, he is taking it out of my next years allowance. At least we had some way to scrounge the money other than selling something, and Rob didn't get laid off, though the company he is temping for lost several large contracts.

What's funny about all of this is that when all attention would have been on the roll out of the health exchanges (and how poorly some of it was implemented), instead all focus was on the shutdown. Talk about poor timing.

Actually I think that was McConnell. It's not shocking Republicans would try to add that to the bill with their name on it and pass it with the moderates in their party and the Democrats.

The Republicans might survive next election just due to time past. This happens in February and we may not be looking at a supermajority but we are definitely looking at Democrat control of two branches of government.

The old guard Republicans can't trust their own caucus.

I'm not so sure of that. I think the Majority of Americans won't vote for a Republican congressman... But that happened last time, as well. Since Reps can draw their boundaries where they please, the Republican party has some very solid districts that they can't lose in, and there's probably enough to be able to keep the House.

Gerrymandering *has* made it hard for them to lose the House... but they seem to be trying their best to do it

That's great in theory, but even Gerrymandering can't fix if you truly tick someone off. I don't think a lot of these places will flip, but you do "loosen up the middle." That is, those people who would prefer to vote their traditional party but when push comes to shove get pissed off by them regularly.

Those are the people that eventually flip. See Christian Evangelicals thereabout the 80's and 90's. Some that remain are either Blue Dog Democrats or Progressive Republicans.

In addition you have old school republicans who will never vote for anything but, because in there heads its the morally superior party with strong Christian values. So anything with a socialist slant is evil. Balancing a budget is paramount to a good economy, unless your pointing out their own inconsistencies towards this. Anything with equal marriage rights is evil and unless your a Christian forget even getting through the primary. Their forgetting that the next generation dosnt have the same viewpoint, and are able to see through a lot of the double speak. So the partys going through an upheaval between generations.
