  • Journalist comments on the Obama inauguration

Two comments from a CNN reporter made my blood boil while I was watching Obama being sworn into office

    1. A reporter states that with Obama as president, America can now once again become a world leader "because thats what the world wants, America as its leader"
He spouted off about how the world NEEDS America to lead and we all WANT them in charge.

And Americans wonder why the ugly American stereotype exsists.

Now I am not anti-american, I think America has much to offer the world. But that doesnt mean I want America acting as the worlds police and deciding what is right and wrong. The UN is there for a reason.

I dont want America to do anything outside of what the UN allows it to. I hope that Obama actually obeys the international law set down instead of doing whatever the fuck he pleases like Bush.
I remember hearing that Bush had won 8 years ago, I was in the car with my Mother and she groaned and said "I bet my eyeteeth that America will be at war with Iraq before his term is done. He has to settle what his daddy started"

    2. The same meatball then totally butchered Obamas speech.

Obama addressed terrorists by stating "for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

Then an entire paragraph seperated in his speech he addressed Muslims -To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.

this so called journalist decided that the two ideas were actually combined and said something idiotic like "it was an interesting thing Obama said to the muslim world, first that we are extending a hand but also that the terrorists had better watch out"

    WTF

so according to this moron muslim = terrorists

never mind the terrorists in Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and America. Terrorists are not just evil muslim men jumping on planes.

Serves me right, I should have watched the inauguration through the BBC - there not perfect but they dont freaking start telling people that YAY America is in charge again.

Do you recall which reporter this was? CNN has more than a few correspondents and hosts that tick me off.

I watched the coverage on C-Span. Completely commentary free once it got started.

No help now, but in four years, it'll be helpful to remember.

I will have to watch CNN to get his name

he was the same idiot who turned to the only african-american on the panel on election night. He said "this must be such a special moment for you" and the black guy looked back with a WTF look and answered "yes me and the rest of America"

I will remember about c-span next time Simply!

I doubt it was Wolf Blitzer - I watch the Situation Room in the afternoons sometimes, and I doubt he'd do or say something that stupid.

I'd like to remind you that CNN is little more that sensationalist media. There concept isn't what the story is, but how they can spin it to the lowest common denominator with as much over the top approach and "rah rah America" as possible.

I would watch the BBC news channel and see detailed coverage on the middle east and the fuel issue in Russia, then turn to CNN and see a half hour discussion on why Obama waved to people.

CNN is like Fox News lately. It's not the story, it's the spin. This comment coming from CNN does not surprise me in the slightest.

CNN is very much an entertainment channel, to me. I get most of my news via podcasts and newspapers.

Just about *every* news channel (locally) is like that. Even though I don't agree with Obama being in the news 24/7, some people can't get enough of him. Still, I'd rather hear what's actually going on in the world, not what that fool ate for breakfast. Years ago, the media simply reported the news. Now, they have to try to 'influence' people and will spin stories one way or the other. Why not present both sides of the story, and let people think for themselves? But, then they'd start questioning the media! We can't have that now, can we? My bad

I totally agree, Ive only watched it a few times (cnn that is) since being over in Canada and they do seem to have forgotten the whole objective journalist mantra.

I will be sticking to routers and bbc from now on.

The only thing that drives me crazy is the "personal" news stories. I'm just not that concerned about the random kid that got lost in a state park or a guy that went windsurfing on a piece of cardboard or a mother who paints her kids purple and leaves in a bathtub, then sticks sunglasses on them and calls them the California raisins.

What I want is world news and political information. Not much of a place to get that anymore, I guess.

I will agree that many of the major news networks sometimes get a little carried away with minor details or with reporting stories that make people step back and say, "Who gives a crap?"

However, when you have several twenty four-hour news networks, you have to expect these sorts of things. These networks---CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, etc.---are constantly scrambling for enough news to fill up all the time they have. This means that they often end up reporting things that really aren't all that newsworthy. Let's face it, there really are some days when no one gets blown up, no planes fall out of the sky, etc. etc. etc. If I had a news network with twenty four hours of time to fill, I would probably end up telling everyone about pointless stories, too.

In spite of all of this, I will admit to getting annoyed when they spend twenty to thirty minutes at a time giving live coverage of some trial or hearing that I don't care about. For instance, back when the brouhaha with Anna Nicole Smith was going on, Headline News often spent up to twenty minutes giving live coverage of the courtroom hearings. The same thing happened during O.J. Simpsons's robbery trial. I really do with they would stop doing that stuff. Let networks like C-Span show long blocks of live coverage of various things like that.

Fun fact: One time I was watching Robin Meade's show on Headline News, and they spent several minutes reporting a story about some event in England where people rolled themselves down a hill, and whoever managed to roll to the bottom of the hill first was awarded a wedge of some kind of cheese.
