Definitely some farmers are fair, but not all are. The living conditions at some of the migrant camps around here are pretty bad. Bad enough that some have been shut down.
It's sad, really. For a lot of people it's a cycle that's hard to break out of because you never really make enough to get going up the ladder. Some manage to do it, I know of several families that by hook or by crook got their citizenship and got enough money scraped together that they started their own gardening service and got out of the camps. Sometimes it involved sleeping in our barn, though (we didn't have enough beds in the house), and letting them have some of the old chickens for supper that didn't lay anymore.
