  • Dad Fighting to Get Son back from Brazil

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26867370/

Short story: Guy's wife takes a trip to her native country, Brazil, and takes their son with her. As soon as she gets there, she calls the father and tells him that she's staying there and keeping the kid. Dad has been fighting it and Brazil has the balls to say that the kid should stay there (Can you tell what my opinion is yet). Mother dies giving birth to kids half-brother. Father STILL can't get kid back. This was in 2004. US Government is now getting involved (Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, is handling it).

Honestly, I don't see how this is possible. It's kidnapping, pure and simple. Both America AND Brazil both have laws against EXACTLY what has happened. As a signer of the Hague Treaties, Brazil should be following international law and should hand the kid over. The Hague is definitely going to have to step in. This is utterly ridiculous in my opinion.

Obviously, I have no "information " other than what has been typed up on that page.

It would appear that legally, you are right GD, and the boy should have returned home.

Now, morally?? That's a different question. Other than dad saying everything was fine, we've got no idea what the family life was really like. And I, for one, am curious as to what makes a 'loving' wife just up and leave her hubby, taking their kid with them. Question - what is hubby really like???

But this sort of stuff does happen a lot more than you'd think, especially in countries that are very patriarchal, and the dad does a runner with the kids (there being relatively few countries that could be considered 'matriarchal'... I'm thinking round about...oh, none??)

All I'm saying is - there is more to this story that meets the eye!
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

I don't know exactly what kind of home life they had at home either. But I do know the town they lived in. It's 20 minutes from where I live. It's not a bad town at all. It's really nice. And what really prompted me to write this was I was watching the news last night and they were interviewing the father and the lawyer representing the son's family in Brazil. I figured if there was something going on in their home life, the lawyer would have said so, making the father look bad, swaying public opinion. But he said nothing of the sort.

Who knows what went on behind closed doors with Mr.Goldman's home life and marriage. The courts should've already awarded him custody of his son, it's just sad sometimes how the courts drag everything.

Exactly. I don't understand why they haven't. In this case the biological father has parental rights and the stepfather has none.
