Although, yes, we have a clown car full of people, including several children, running for president.

I think Greenday more meant that neither of the two are exactly mature enough for the Presidency. It doesn't excuse what Trump did- it just means that Graham isn't actually much better.

Then who among the current R contenders would be? Because we are most definitely in a "it's the economy stupid" sort of election season just like in 1992. And I hope Bush Sr. didn't feel too bad about losing that election despite his big Gulf War win the year prior. Same thing pretty much happened to Winston Churchill after WWII (basically what works during wartime doesn't necessarily work during peacetime/post-war). No joke, look it up.

It's a very wide open field and we still got a little over a year to go before the D/R National Conventions, much less the election itself. It's just way too early to tell who among the R contenders is gonna be "for real" if you get what I mean.

Its been "Its the economy stupid" for a while. Even when said economy is improving. The economy is low hanging fruit to run on because the average American voter doesn't understand how it works, whose responsible for it or how long it takes to change. The other low hanging fruit is "VOTE FOR ME OR BROWN PEOPLE WILL KILL YOUR FAMILY".

Alternatively, you can just say "Constitution" and "Freedom" as much as possible if you don't actually have any platform to run on. That seems to work fairly well too. >.>

Also, yeah, while Graham is a smarmy bastard, Trump is definitely The Biggest Asshole here ( and everywhere else. )

Well The Donald has been on a roll lately.

            - He wants to close down Mosques
            - He thinks all Muslims should have special IDs
            - He wants to remove all Muslims from the country
            - Claims he saw 1000s of Muslims in NJ celebrating on 9/11
            - Has been tweeting bogus facts about black crime
            - He said a protester who got beaten up at one of his rallies deserved it

This and so much more and despite all of that, Mr. Trump is STILL the Republican frontrunner and current odds on favourite to win the nomination.

What is wrong with this country?

I actually read something about Trump that had a positive sound; that had me do a double take:

              https://theintercept.com/2015/12/03/...ant-be-bought/

No idea if there's some background here that I'm not catching, but his statements sounded surprisingly reasonable.

Not to put lipstick on a pig, but technically he didn't say this. He said Muslims should be registered in a database so they can be tracked (similar to a sex offender registry, I bet) but didn't call for special IDs. Not that this makes what he really said much better.

The fact that so many people are supporting him is greatly upsetting to me. A lot of his platform rests on his claim that because he's so rich, he doesn't need to rely on lobbyist money to tell him what to do. That's great and all, except first of all, the rest of his platform is batshit crazy, and second of all presidents are already more or less unpressured by lobbyists, as it's typically congress who gets lobby support. Plus, I might need to research this a bit, but I'm pretty sure he himself has participated in lobbies as part of his business practices to gain an advantage through political pressure, which makes him a hypocrite on top of that.

If he gets chosen as president I will have absolutely no hope left that we can wisely choose a good leader for our country, I don't want to even imagine the shit we're going to have to deal with as a result. I can't believe that some people I have known that are really smart and have gone to college are acting like him becoming president would be the best thing in the world.

Update: I was talking to my parents and mentioned that I was voting for Bernie Sanders, and my dad said he was voting for trump. My mom said she didn't like anyone so she wouldn't vote. What I can't stand is how on Facebook there are all these pictures and comments about how trump is is the most perfect candidate ever who can do and say no wrong and how he's America's golden boy, and how Obama is either an evil scheming Muslim and needs to die and pictures of him dying/already dead or how he's a stupid dirty n word who needs to go back to Africa. I really don't like trump but I don't wish him dead and post pictures of him dying or dead, to me that's definitely crossing the line and completely disrespectful.

I would totally believe that this is a "Head of State" scenario, where the candidate they wanted died/was indisposed or something, and they just grabbed Trump solely for losing purposes.

I sincerely hope you're right. The very idea of him as the President of the United States is terrifying.

No side can win without the moderates/independents/swing voters and the GOP is doing everything in their power to ensure such people run screaming in the other direction at this point.

They've been huffing their own farts for so long it seems like they actually believe that the majority of America is made up of the human debris they are currently pandering too. Romney made a similar mistake but it wasn't on such a colossal scale as this.

The only reasonably sane explanation is that they're trying to burn out the nutjob wing of the party by letting it demonstrate just how awful it is to the nation as a whole. Then after they lose horribly they can blame the nutjob wing and try to get rid of the monster they created.

I'm not sure any of them have planned that far ahead however. -.-

It really seems that they are pandering to the conservative extremists. Which makes no sense since they will vote Republican no matter what. There's been no effort to try to convince anyone near the middle that they are going to do any good for the country at all.
