  • Persona 3 Portable

Okay. I love Persona 3. It was my first Shin Megami Tensei game and it is one of the best RPGs I've ever played in my entire life. The battle system and game play is amazing. I loved the story line and music as well. This game rocked my freakin' socks and brought me to play other SMT games such as Persona 4, Devil Summoner 1 and 2, and Devil Survivor. Haven't played Digital Devil Saga because I can't find it anywhere but that's a story for another time.

Case in point: I love Persona 3 but seriously, do we really need three versions of this game?

Just about every forum I go to I hear P3P this and P3P that! I'm sorry, but I'm not going to shell out another $30 or so bucks to replay a game I already own. Persona 3's story line is done. It's over. I beat the game and I'm ready to move on to the next journey in the Persona-saga.

But no! I can't because Atlus won't stop remaking this game! The game originally came out in 2007 and we already have three freakin' versions of it? What. The. Hell? Why can't they put their efforts and resources into making Persona 5?

"But you can play as a girl this time!"

Well that's great. I really don't care. If it matters that much why don't they just make the protagonist of Persona 5 a female?

"But you can control all the party members this time!"

Awesome! You could do that in Persona 4! And while I'll admit that having your party on AI was pretty annoying and down right crippling at times, I kind of enjoyed being able to setup my AI tactics, pick a move and just watch the turn play out with no pause. All a matter of preference.

"But you can establish S-links with your male party members this time!"

That's fantastic but again, I really don't care. In fact there are only two things about P3P that I'm remotely interested in: Junpei's S-link and Theodore. But guess what? I can watch those events on Youtube for free once someone uploads them. Not enough incentive for me to buy the game.

I really don't mean to rain on the parade of anyone who's actually looking forward to this but come on! As much as I love Persona 3 I'm tired of hearing about it. Can't we just move the fuck on already? I want a new story. I want to meet a new cast of characters. I really wish Atlus would just put some effort into making Persona 5 instead of Persona 3: Super Delux Director's Cut!

    Grrrr . . . .

If you think 3 versions of the same game is bad, you should take a look at Final Fantasy 4.

The Japanese had 2 versions of the original SNES game when it was released: The normal "hard mode" version and the dummed-down "easy mode" version. When they released it in the States (as Final Fantasy 2) they made a different "easy mode" version for us.

"Hard mode" version was re-released on the PS1 as part of Final Fantasy Chronicles.

The Wonderswan Color got an enhanced remake of the game, with slightly updated (but still 16bit) graphics.

The GBA got a second enhanced remake of the game, with the graphics from the Wonderwan version, a couple extra dungeons, and a re-translation for the English version.

The Nintendo DS got a complete remake of the game, with completely new (updated) graphics, an updated battle system, voice acted cut-scenes, and a New Game+ feature.

FINALLY, the latest incarnation of the game is a mobile phone version that was released earlier this year.

If you count all the separate versions up (including the original Japanese "hard mode" and "easy mode" and the English "easy mode," which were all different in their degrees of difficulty) that's 8 versions of the same game.

Granted, it is my favorite game, but porting it to mobile phone when it's already out for 3 other mobile gaming systems is a little excessive.

As well, there's Lunar. Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Playstation, GBA, and soon to be PSP. Each game is modified enough to even be labeled differently and one game has features that other ones don't.

Actually, the "mobile phone version" you're talking about is FF IV: The After Years, a sequel, not a remake.

And was also released on the Wii in chapter setup.

(yes, I do have it, as well as FF2 for the SNES, FF Chronicles, FFIV Adv, AND FFIV DS)

I am indeed talking about a remake, not the sequel. I am very familiar with the sequel, having followed it chapter-by-chapter when it was released in Japan through fan translation sites, and having played the Wii version when it came out here. However, in October of this year, a mobile phone version of FF4 (the original, not the sequel) was released in Japan:

Here are some screens. They're using TAY's updated graphics:

Imagine for a minute you are a business.
You make a product that everyone loves, and can't get enough of.
Hmmmm... a couple of modifications here and there, and you issue forth an update/expansion/installment/new platform. Not a sequel, but the fan-base is mildly mollified, and you bought yourself more time and MONEY to pay for resources to make the sequel, or next in the series.
(This might be the business model for several computer/console games now. Definitely the CCG trade.)
Depending on how much money you make, depends on how many times you can keep doing that (wash, rinse, repeat = $$$).
Now, it's going to take you time, money, brain-power and resources to come up with a sequel. A sequel that's worth anything and won't kill your franchise.
Atlus is a business and they're out to make money. That's the bottom line.
