Just wondering what everyone thinks of the fracas surrounding Jay Leno and Conan O'Brian.

My take? I don't think Leno wanted to retire in '09. I think that back in '04, other networks were courting Conan, and NBC needed a carrot to dangle in front of him to keep him signed on. So they leaned on Jay and pressured him to stand down, and to pass the torch to Conan.
"But what about me? Where do I go after that?" asks Jay.
"Don't worry, we'll fit you in somehwere. Maybe we'll give you a Prime Time show!" say the executives.
Jay agrees and things get announced.

Six months after the big change, the execs are troubled, and so is Jay. He never wanted to retire at all, and now his new show sucks (because he isn't funny, but I digress). The execs are wringing their hands and wondering what to do, and I think Jay came up to them and offered the idea to wave the magic time reversal wand (available at your local department store for $29.95!). He sees it as his way of getting back from NBC what he never wanted to give up, and the execs see it as a way to pretend none of 2009 ever happened. They are all convinced that Conan will go along, after all, who wouldn't want what is best for their company?
But alas, Mr O'Brian turns out the be the kind of self-serving bastard who wants to protect his career and believes in the show he was doing, and won't go along with the deal. How rude!
And now, here we are watching Late Night NBC collapse in a heap of inane management decisions.

    Thoughts?

Jay Leno hasn't been funny in ages and while I personally don't like Conan O'Brian, I respect what he's doing. Instead of fighting this, he's just stepping down. Leno will get his old show back, and all the little old ladies who stay up to watch his monologue will be happy.

I'm a Craig Ferguson fan, though. I wish him and Letterman would switch time slots.

I don't really watch either, but Conan is a hell of a lot funnier than Leno. He got promoted, Leno whined, then Conan got demoted which is a slap in the face. Conan did the right thing.

You know what really gets me about it now? Most people will forget by the time March 1st rolls around and Jay is back on the Tonight Show. No one will stay mad at NBC or the Crimson Chin and things will mostly die down.

Hopefully Conan willl come back in September and remind people.

Am I the only person who is tired of hearing about it? Seems you can't go one day without hearing about the latest part of this soap opera

I never watched the Tonight Show, but the SO is a big CoCo fan and he was here this weekend, so we watched the final episode. It was awesome, and the ending was AMAZING.

You're not. Take comfort in the fact that there are at least two of us Jay hasn't been funny in a while and I absolutely can't stand Conan. O' Brian's fans in particular are driving me nuts with this whole thing.

It was a nickname Tom Hanks gave him, I think.

I think Jay Leno is the blandest comedian on the planet. He's flat-out not funny. That's why his show is failing. You can't put dumb content like his on the air before people are dopey and half-asleep.

You'd be surprised. Ellen DeGeneres still has her show. Seriously, she's not funny, and has *never* been funny.

So, I've seen this sort of discussion a few places, and I've noticed that it's always Conan fans talking. Guess I get to buck the trend.

I have never found Conan O'Brian to be funny. Jay Leno, on the other hand, never fails to crack me up. So I'm not at all disappointed that he's going back to his previous time.

Now, I don't follow entertainment news, so I'm not sure of the details here, but from what I know NBC is handling this really badly. If they said that Conan got the Tonight Show, he should have the show at it's normal time. I do think that his reaction is entirely reasonable and I have a lot more respect for him (although I still won't be watching him).

Bit incoherent, but you asked for thoughts and here they are!
